Tree's that synchronise across time?

Tree's that synchronise across time?

imageHave you noticed that there aren’t many Acorns on the ground this autumn?

Quiet years are part of Oak’s natural cycle. Reducing predator numbers so that in future years the tree’s can over produce (a mast year) successfully and there will be some acorns left to take root.

It seems curious to me that a regions Oak trees can collectively plan for the future…

It got me thinking about our relationship with nature in the past and future.

What would our ancestors do during a quiet year, when there are so few acorns?

Acorns are a rich carbohydrate source and many ancient people would have relied on them – did they store them in times of abundance to cover them in times of lack? Did they swap to a different food source? Did they trade with other tribes further away?

They knew the cycles of nature intimately, they would know about quiet years for acorns and share that knowledge with their children so that future generations would also know how to live in these quiet years.

This is Heritage Knowledge; ecological wisdom that grows from connection with a heritage species or elements.

In this month’s Forest School Community Connection Call we’ll explore how deepening our connection with Heritage Species and Elements can remind us of ancient wisdom and guide us to a more connected future.

Join us online tomorrow (13th October) as we unpick this idea together, including:

= ) What are Heritage Species and Elements and what gifts do they offer us – in the past and today?

= ) How can we help people become more connected with our natural heritage?

= ) Becoming more connected ‘ancestors’ for future generations?
