When Misfortune Follows: Understanding "Pilay-Kulam" Through the Lens of Filipino Magick

Sep 24, 2026

imageRecently, someone reached out to me asking for help. They shared that they suddenly developed an unexplained limp or piang in one foot. The pain came unexpectedly, disappeared, then returned with greater intensity. At the same time, a series of unfortunate events seemed to unfold around them. Important items were lost, family conflicts emerged, mistakes began happening at work, and near accidents occurred one after another.

Their question was simple:

"Apu, how do I break pilay-kulam?"

This question touches upon a belief found in many Filipino communities where physical discomfort, misfortune, and emotional disturbances are sometimes interpreted as the effects of kulam, usog, harmful intentions, or spiritual imbalance. Whether one interprets such experiences through a spiritual lens, a psychological lens, or a combination of both, there is wisdom in pausing, reflecting, cleansing, and restoring balance.

The Nature of Energy in Filipino Magick

In Filipino Magick and many Indigenous Filipino traditions, human beings are not isolated creatures. We constantly interact with the energies of our environment.

Every day we engage with people, places, conversations, news, social media, work environments, family dynamics, and countless unseen influences. Some of these interactions nourish us, while others leave us feeling exhausted, anxious, confused, or burdened.

Think of your spiritual and emotional body as similar to a clean window.

When left unattended, dust slowly accumulates. One layer may not be noticeable, but over time the buildup becomes thick enough to affect visibility.

In the same way, emotional stress, unresolved conflicts, fear, anger, jealousy, grief, disappointment, and negative encounters may accumulate within us. Whether we call them energetic attachments, emotional burdens, or spiritual heaviness, they can affect our overall sense of well-being.

This does not automatically mean that every hardship is caused by witchcraft or a curse.

Sometimes the greatest healing begins when we acknowledge that life naturally exposes us to both constructive and destructive influences. What matters is that we regularly cleanse ourselves physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.

A Filipino Magick Self-Care Cleansing Practice

One self-care practice I often recommend is a simple cleansing ritual that encourages release and renewal.

What You Need

  • A clean piece of paper

  • A pen or pencil

  • A small drop of healing oil

  • A safe outdoor place where burning paper is permitted

  • A glass of water

The Practice

First, write down everything that is weighing upon you.

Write your fears.

Write your frustrations.

Write your disappointments.

Write your anger.

Write your sadness.

Write your mistakes.

Write your worries.

Write every negative experience, thought, emotion, and burden that you wish to release.

When you have finished writing, take the paper and gently rub it over your entire body, beginning from the crown of your head and moving down to the soles of your feet.

Do not rush.

Move deliberately and mindfully.

As you do this, imagine transferring all heaviness, negativity, stress, and burden into the paper.

Afterward, place a tiny drop of healing oil upon the paper.

Step outside beneath the open sky, whether during the day or at night.

Safely burn the paper until it becomes ash.

As the paper burns, visualize all burdens being transformed and released.

When finished, return inside, drink a glass of water, and rest.

You may perform this practice once daily, especially in the evening before sleep.

Why Fire, Water, and Writing Matter

Many traditional cultures recognize the transformative power of symbolic actions.

Writing brings hidden emotions into conscious awareness.

Touch creates intentional connection between mind and body.

Fire symbolizes transformation and release.

Water symbolizes restoration, balance, and renewal.

When combined with sincere intention, these simple actions become powerful tools for self-reflection and personal healing.

In Filipino Magick, ritual is not merely about supernatural intervention.

It is also about creating sacred moments that allow us to reclaim our focus, restore our center, and remember our connection to life, spirit, and community.

A Note About Health and Well-Being

As a practitioner and teacher of Filipino Indigenous spiritual traditions, I also encourage balance and common sense.

If pain persists, becomes severe, or interferes with daily activities, seek proper medical evaluation. Spiritual self-care and professional healthcare can work together. One does not need to exclude the other.

True healing often comes through multiple pathways.

The Importance of Preserving Filipino Magick

The teachings of Filipino Magick represent generations of ancestral wisdom that have survived colonization, modernization, and cultural change.

Many practices were never written in books.

They were passed from teacher to student, elder to younger generation, community to community.

Today, preserving these teachings requires research, documentation, teaching, travel, content creation, and countless hours of work.

Every article we publish, every educational video we create, every class we teach, and every story we preserve helps ensure that Indigenous Filipino knowledge remains available for future generations.
