Laon, Lalahon, Malaon, Kanlaon: Encountering the Ancient One Through the Full Moon

There are moments in spiritual practice when a sacred presence reveals itself in ways deeper than tradition, deeper than story, and deeper than expectation. Such moments do not replace what our ancestors have taught us. Rather, they expand our understanding and deepen our relationship with the Divine.

In recent months, as we continued our prayers and invocations to Diwatang Kanlaon of Negros, new insights emerged regarding this ancient being. While Kanlaon is widely associated with the majestic volcano that rises over Negros Island, our experiences in ritual and contemplation revealed several sacred names connected to this presence: Laon, Lalahon, Malaon, and Kanlaon.

Though these names point toward the same sacred reality, each reveals a distinct aspect of the Ancient One.

Laon: The Ancient One

At the heart of these names is the word Laon, which may be understood as "the Ancient One." In our reflections, Laon appears as a primordial creator presence, a supreme feminine force associated with the sky, agriculture, fertility, and divine justice.

Laon reminds us that life is not accidental. The cycles of growth, harvest, and renewal are woven into the sacred fabric of existence. Through Laon, we recognize that creation itself is a continuing act of divine love and wisdom.

Lalahon: Fire, Harvest, and Transformation

The name Lalahon reveals another dimension of this sacred being. Closely connected to harvest, crops, fertility, fire, and volcanic activity, Lalahon embodies nature's power to create and transform.

Just as a volcano can reshape the land, Lalahon teaches us that transformation often requires courage and change. What appears destructive may also become a source of fertility and renewal. The same fire that erupts from the earth eventually enriches the soil and prepares it for new life.

Malaon: Guardian of Time and Life

In contrast to the fiery aspect of Lalahon, Malaon manifests as a gentle, compassionate, and nurturing presence.

Malaon is experienced as understanding, patient, sympathetic, and protective. She preserves life and rules over the sacred flow of time. Through Malaon, we are reminded that growth cannot be rushed. Every healing process, every lesson, and every spiritual awakening unfolds according to its proper season.

Malaon invites us to trust the timing of life and to recognize that even in our struggles, we are being guided toward wisdom.

Kanlaon: Protector and Keeper of Justice

The name Kanlaon embodies strength, majesty, protection, and justice. As the sacred mountain standing watch over Negros, Kanlaon appears as a mighty guardian of the people.

Kanlaon reminds us that divine power is not measured by domination but by preservation of life. Justice is not merely punishment but the restoration of harmony. As protector, Kanlaon stands among the people, watching over communities, guiding them toward balance, and inspiring them to persevere through adversity.

A Full Moon Gathering by the Sea

Yesterday afternoon, following our Hilot Binabaylan class, our students, faculty, and companions traveled to the beach to celebrate the Full Moon in honor of Diwatang Kanlaon.

Together, we gathered beneath the evening sky, listening to the waves and reflecting upon the presence of the Ancient One.

During our sharing circle, an important realization emerged.

We came to understand that the Diwata have never abandoned humanity.

They continue to guide us, not only through visions, signs, and sacred places but also through the people who journey beside us. We recognized the presence of the Ancient One in our parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, teachers, mentors, friends, and loved ones.

Through them, the wisdom of the Diwata continues to reach us.

Through them, guidance appears when we need direction.

Through them, encouragement arrives when we are weary.

Through them, love reminds us that we never walk alone.

As each participant shared their reflections, we felt a deep sense of gratitude for all those who have influenced our lives and contributed to our growth and success.

To honor these insights, we chanted the sacred names:

Laon. Lalahon. Malaon. Kanlaon.

With every repetition, we offered our intentions to the Diwata and entrusted them to the sacred currents of life. It was a moment of unity, remembrance, and hope.

The Diwata Are Still Speaking

One of the greatest lessons from this Full Moon gathering is that the Diwata are not distant beings confined to ancient stories.

They remain present.

They continue to inspire.

They continue to teach.

The sacred is not limited to mountains, forests, rivers, or ritual spaces. The sacred is also found in relationships, acts of kindness, shared wisdom, and the people who help shape our lives.

When we learn to recognize these manifestations, we begin to understand that the Divine has never truly left us.

The Ancient One still walks among us.

The Ancient One still speaks.

The Ancient One still guides.
