Hi — I'm Chris. I made The Lexicon of Feeling to provide a free, carefully sourced dictionary and thesaurus of emotions, including definitions, the subtle differences between similar words, etymology and untranslatable feeling-words. It started as a simple tool for me to learn more about emotions and feelings in an effort to identify them and expand my emotional palette. I was particularly interested in non-English words which offer simple, one-word descriptions for emotions and feelings which require one or more sentences for English speakers to describe. I hope this will make them feel less complex. While I agree with the emotional granularity theory, I don't agree with folks who say we need a word for an emotion in order to experience it. The entire breadth of emotions is available to people of all cultures and backgrounds but they may still be confusing and poorly articulated in minds and mouths without some helpful vocabulary. Curiosity and my love of words drove me to dig deeper into the meanings and histories. I generally have multiple jobs and not a lot of bandwidth or personal time, but I would love for this site to remain free (and ad-free), available, maintained, growing, and hopefully a pleasure to look at. A coffee (or more likely a snack) helps me keep it that way, so I appreciate your help!
