I know very little about art and less about architecture but I had a thought about both that I have been mulling over and would now like to share.
The context was a fly-on-the wall documentary I was watching about the Paris Olympics (available on iPlayer). It included lots of footage of France being gorgeous including a stunning shot of Mont St Michel.
My thought was this, all great art, maybe all art, requires the artist to believe in something bigger than him or herself. It doesn't have to be a belief in the God of the Bible, but there needs to be some sense that there is more to life than can be seen.
Even art that claims to be a reflection of the meaningless or pointlessness of life, is subverting itself because why make it if nothing matters?
