Josh Johnson and Community

Josh Johnson and Community

May 16, 2025

One of the few gifts of the Instagram algorithm back when I was on social media was the recommendation to watch a young African American comedian called Josh Johnson (you can find him on YouTube).

I have very, very occasionally heard him use a swear word or say something off-colour on older material and on segments he does for The Daily Show, but on his recent stand up sets that he shares every Tuesday, I have never heard him swear. He focuses on what is happening in the US in a gentle, kindly and whimsical way that is a great antidote to other voices that are clamouring for attention.

Taste in comedy is a very personal thing, so I am not saying he will be everyone's cup of tea, but I just want to quote some lines from one of his routines, The Only Way to Survive a Recession.

"The only was forward is with other people....The number one way is through community... Your future is your neighbour....There's no other way forward... If there is a community you want around you, all you have to do is be its founder... It's so much more likely that you're going to build community than that you're going to become a billionaire."

I love this.

And it's what I am trying to do with this page: to create a virtual community of people who seek joy, meaning and the Kingdom of God every day, in the smallest of things. Just by reading, you encourage me. Liking and commenting my posts is great, too, and I'd love you to share anything that resonates with you to any social media platforms you have.
