I needed to buy some tickets from the machine at Central Station and after I paid, the tickets didn't appear.
Cross, I went to the ticket office to get a human to take up my case.
"Not to worry," the man behind the counter said. "That is just a provisional payment, and when the machine realizes it hasn't printed the tickets at midnight, you'll be refunded."
"Does that happen often?" I asked.
"All the time. That's what you get, choosing a machine over a person, putting us out of work."
"Are you offended?" I asked.
"Always. Wouldn't you be?"
