Rehydrating Our Freeze Dried Meal - Breakfast Egg Scramble (Ham, Onions, Bell Peppers)

Oct 26, 2026

We Rehydrated one of our Breakfast Egg Scrambles with Ham, Onions, and Bell Peppers on a recent cabin camping weekend getaway trip - here's what we learned:imageIt was really cold and foggy in the mornings at the cabin, and it was nice to have a piping hot breakfast that took no time at all to prepare and enjoy. It took less than two minutes to heat up the water, and ten minutes to rehydrate - so convenient for traveling!imageThis meal was freeze dried back in Nov 2023. Periodically we like to pull meals out of our storage bins and spot check them to be sure all is well. imageWhile packing for our trip I checked the seals and made sure the contents were dry / crunchy with a gentle squeeze. Later, when opening, I gave the contents a visual check and a sniff test and all seemed well.

Here's our list of recommended tools and accessories that we use when traveling and rehydrating our freeze dried meals.

We used hot, but not boiling, bottled water to rehydrate our FD meal. Filtered, distilled, or bottled water tastes better than tap. In our experiments we have learned that we prefer Not to use boiling water to rehydrate our meals - especially scrambled eggs meals - since this tends to overcook and make things rubbery. We also slightly undercook when preparing a breakfast meal like this so that it's a bit "wet." This is how we normally eat them at home, and this way the scrambled eggs come out the way we like them when rehydrating.imageAs usual, our insulated containers kept this breakfast piping hot while we waited the 10 minutes for rehydration. We had purposely diced the ham, onions, and bell peppers small and they rehydrated very well. We have rehydrated several bags in the past of this meal during travel situations and it's one of our favorite breakfasts (along with FD Biscuits & Sausage Gravy).imageIf you haven't pulled anything out of your FD storage to spot-check in a while then I hope that this encourages you to do so.imageNeed our Recipe?
