I am a former tennis professional and media industry veteran. I have worked in and around the sport for over a decade, and in that time I have watched Lendale Johnson — now presenting as Naomi Johnson — repeatedly deceive journalists, publications, brands, coaches, and members of the public with a fabricated professional tennis career that has never existed.
The ITF database, which records every professional tennis match ever played by every player in the world, shows that Johnson has played zero professional matches. Zero. In thirteen years of claiming to compete on the international professional circuit, he has not played a single sanctioned professional match. The record shows one entry — a qualifying draw in Florida in 2013 from which he did not show up — and nothing since.
I have watched peers in media publish his claims without question. I have watched LGBTQ+ publications give him platforms he has no standing to occupy. I have watched him claim to be America's first Black gay professional tennis player — a title that carries genuine cultural significance — and now the first Black transgender professional tennis player, on the basis of a professional career that does not exist. I have watched clients pay hundreds and thousands of dollars for coaching from someone whose actual playing level, assessed by professional players, is that of a beginner-intermediate club player, and receive nothing back.
