Italy is famous for its many festivals, parties, and events that happen all year round to mark important times in history, the changing of seasons, harvests, and special holidays. One thing you might see at these events is the Italian Flag Throwers, also known as "Sbandieratori."

These perfoanced mostly happen at festivals with a medieval or Renaissance theme, but not only. People gather to watch these performers do their thing, and it's not just about the past – it's also about having fun now.

When these Flag Throwers perform, most likely they will have drums and trumpets playing along, adding to the excitement. They do amazing routines with big, colorful flags that have special symbols and designs on them, often related to their city, area, or noble families. They twirl and throw the flags up into the air with style and grace, making it look easy, even though it's not. People love it when they perform alone, using multiple flags at once.

But why all this fuss about flags? What do they mean, and how long have Italians been doing this?

Flags have been around for a very long time, even in ancient Egypt, Greece, and among Jewish people. Back then, flags were used to show who was important, to tell apart different armies in battles, and even at religious gatherings.

During wars, the people carrying the flags were highly respected because they were brave and important. Their flags had special designs that showed where they came from, like their town or principality. These flag-bearers led their troops into battles, and their flags were used to send important signals to their leaders and give orders to the soldiers. They did all of this with clear and brave actions.

In times of peace, these flag movements turned into an art form, and you can see this at celebrations and festivals today. Groups that care about history and culture train and perform these ancient flag routines, showing off the flags from their town or neighborhood.

During our live broadcasts from various events, we've come across many groups of "sbandieratori," from the very skilled to small groups of kids. It's always a joy to watch.

On September 3rd, we're heading to Asti, a beautiful medieval town in the Piedmont region, where the annual Palio, a horse race, will kick off with an exciting Flag Throwers show.
