Update: Disco came home from the hospital on the evening of Sunday, April 6th. He has completed a week of strict stall rest, antibiotics, and anti-inflammatories. His wound is looking good and his spirits are high! Can't wait to see him giddy up in the pasture once he gets the all-clear from the vet hopefully soon!

Hi everyone! My 12 month old colt, Disco, recently sustained an injury during a stressful event. I wasn't present at the time, but he went through a fence and made a beeline to the barn, where an amazing barn-mate was able to catch him and calm him. We are so grateful she was there!
Disco ended up with a laceration that nicked the sheath of a tendon in his leg. Miraculously, it didn't penetrate the joint capsule--but it was close. Due to the nature and location of the injury, Disco had to be hospitalized immediately. He is still at the equine hospital, but we're hoping for discharge soon.
The best news is that I carry insurance on Disco, so the majority of his treatment is covered. Huge sigh of relief there. That said, some important elements of his recovery arenāt covered, including:
Transportation to and from the hospital (~$700)
"Alternative therapies" such as massage, chiropractic, laser/red light therapy
Toys and enrichment to keep his mind busy during up to two weeks of stall rest (where he's confined to a stall about 23 hours a day!)
Unlimited good boy treats (non-negotiable, obviously)
Supplements for pain relief, gut health, and wound healing
Disco has a good piggy bank started, but it will be stretched pretty thin during his recovery.
All in all, this is a serious injury, but not a long-term or debilitating oneāand thatās the best outcome we could have hoped for. Thank you for reading and for loving him right alongside us. Iāll update soon when I hear from the vet about when he can come home.
