When You Can’t Explain Your Thoughts the Way You Want To

imageHave you ever been in the middle of a conversation and you know what you want to say, but for some reason, you can’t get the words out the way you want to? You know what you’re trying to explain, but when you actually say it, it doesn’t come out quite right. Then, moments or hours later, you think of exactly what you wish you’d said.

This happens to me all the time. I can explain everything perfectly in my head, but when it comes down to communicating it, I struggle to get it across. What comes out of my mouth doesn’t always make sense. It’s like my thoughts come rushing at me too fast, and I just mumble or blurt out whatever comes to mind first.

The really frustrating part is that I know what I’m trying to say. It’s not that I don’t have anything to say. It’s that getting the words from my head into an actual conversation doesn’t go the way I intend.

It mostly happens when I’m put on the spot and feel pressured to respond right away. I can be trying to answer a question, and suddenly I’m having trouble figuring out how to word it. I know what I mean, but I’m trying to find the right words while the conversation is still happening.

For example, someone might ask me about something that happened on a trip, and I’ll start telling the story thinking I know exactly how I want to explain it. But then I get caught up trying to remember which details to include and how to make sure the other person understands what happened. Before I know it, I’m jumping around or leaving out parts of the story that probably would’ve helped make more sense of it. Then afterward, I think of all the things I should’ve said.

It’s frustrating to think about a conversation later and realize I had so much more I wanted to say. I’ll remember something I forgot to mention or think of a better response that would’ve made more sense than what I actually said. I wish I could go back and have the conversation again, but all I can do is replay it in my mind and think about what I would’ve done differently.

Sometimes, I wonder if the other person understood what I was trying to say at all. They might get the general gist of it, but I worry that I left out something important or didn’t get my point across the way I wanted to.

I don’t always want to go back and clarify things, either, because it can feel awkward to bring something up again after I’ve already moved on. So, I end up keeping the rest of my thoughts to myself, even when I wish I’d said more.

I’ve noticed that it’s always been easier for me to get my thoughts out on paper. I can take my time, organize what I want to say, and go back to something if I realize I’ve left out an important detail. Talking doesn’t give me that same time.

If I mention something that requires a more detailed story behind it, I realize I’ve just put myself out there to explain it in real time. I’ve always struggled with explaining details because I either have too much to say or too little, especially when I don’t want the attention focused on me.

The truth is, I get really nervous being put on the spot and having to paint a picture for someone else. I know the story so well in my mind, but when the words come out, they don’t even make much sense to me. I can only imagine how frustrated the other person gets when I’m trying to explain something.

Sometimes, I’m great at the delivery and can keep a conversation going with no problem. But most of the time, it’s a struggle to get things out the way I want to.

And I think that’s what gets to me the most. I want people to understand what I’m trying to say, not just the words that happen to come out. I just wish I could get more of those thoughts out while I have the chance.
