At Embody Lib, we define Body Liberation as "the process of dismantling the systems in which we politicize the body while embodying individual and collective liberatory praxis." But what does this mean in practice? How does it apply to professionals, organizations, institutions, and companies with a vested interest in improving health and well-being? Let’s unpack this definition and explore its implications for our work.

Body Liberation is the process of dismantling the systems in which we politicize the body while embodying individual and collective liberatory praxis.

What Does it Mean to "Politicize" Bodies

Body Liberation begins with recognizing that the way bodies are perceived and treated are NOT neutral in society. They are deeply politicized—categorized, controlled, and assigned value based on size, race, gender, ability, and other intersecting social identities. The structures we operate within—healthcare, education, media, public policy—reinforce these hierarchies, determining who is deemed worthy of care, representation, and access to resources.

Dismantling these systems means actively challenging the ways institutions perpetuate body-based oppression. It requires organizations to interrogate their policies, practices, and messaging, ensuring they do not reinforce harmful narratives prioritizing certain bodies over others. This could look like:

  • Advocating for weight-inclusive healthcare models that reject BMI-based discrimination.

  • Ensuring nutrition and wellness programs center cultural humility rather than prescriptive, one-size-fits-all approaches.

  • Addressing workplace wellness initiatives that unintentionally reinforce diet culture and body surveillance.

Liberatory Praxis: From Theory to Action

Liberation is not just a theoretical concept—it must be embodied and lived. Praxis is the ongoing cycle of reflection and action that helps translate theory, frameworks, and scholarship into everyday practice. Body Liberation calls for individuals and communities to actively reject harmful societal norms while cultivating new ways of being that honor bodily autonomy, dignity, and justice.

For institutions and companies committed to health equity, this means:

  • Moving beyond performative DEI commitments to integrate justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion into everyday operations.

  • Shifting from traditional health narratives that focus on "fixing" bodies to approaches that empower individuals to reclaim their well-being on their own terms.

  • Supporting systemic solutions—such as policy advocacy, community-driven research, and resource redistribution—that address the root causes of health disparities.

We Have an Individual AND Collective Responsibility

Body Liberation is not just personal—it’s collective. It acknowledges that individual healing cannot exist in isolation from structural change. For true liberation to take place, organizations and institutions must create spaces that actively work to unlearn and dismantle oppressive practices.

At Embody Lib, we guide organizations in:

  • Developing frameworks that prioritize lived experience and community expertise in shaping health and wellness initiatives.

  • Cultivating inclusive environments where people feel safe to exist in their bodies and takes accountability when judgment, harm, or exclusion occurs

  • Encouraging ongoing learning and unlearning around how body-based oppression manifests in different systems and structures.

The Journey is as Important as the Destination

Body Liberation is an evolving, dynamic process that requires ongoing commitment, accountability, and intentional action. At Embody Lib, we work alongside organizations, institutions, and companies that seek to create a world where all bodies are valued, respected, and free from systemic oppression.

By dismantling harmful systems, embodying liberatory praxis, and embracing both individual and collective responsibility, we move closer to a reality where health and well-being are not conditional on how a body looks, functions, or conforms to societal norms.
