Translating a website or application can prove to be quite a challenge, and at times impossible, especially if you aren’t well-versed in all the world’s languages. India, for example, has over 22 spoken languages. As freelancers, we can’t all afford to pay for professional translators, but we’re in luck. There’s a free solution that’s currently making waves in the tech world — ChatGPT. Though AI is currently trending, it’s always wise to take advantage of the available tools.
So, how did I utilize ChatGPT to translate a website? Initially, I requested ChatGPT to generate necessary texts. I didn’t ask for every word, as it’s fairly straightforward to name a button. I was more interested in meta tags, as I believed that being a bot, ChatGPT would be better suited to generating effective meta titles and descriptions for SEO purposes.
I asked ChatGPT a simple query: “Write a meta title and description for https://imagescolor.com". I received an impressive title and description in record time, faster than I could have done it myself.
After around 20 minutes of conversing with ChatGPT, I obtained a list of texts that I could use on the web page right away. Then came the translations, which took a little longer than 20 minutes.
I attempted various methods, starting with the simplest one: I provided the list of previously generated texts and asked ChatGPT to translate them into Ukrainian, Romanian, Italian, Spanish, German, Estonian, Greek, and Bulgarian. This method didn’t work well as Greek and Ukrainian characters are “heavier,” and ChatGPT stopped generating in the middle of the text. Consequently, I decided to ask ChatGPT to translate each language separately, which worked well for Latin characters. It translated quickly and didn’t stop midway. However, for Cyrillic or Greek characters, I had to generate a sentence for each one so that ChatGPT wouldn’t stop before the end.
Currently, I have translated the web page into 38 languages, all with the assistance of ChatGPT, and it was free.
In conclusion, by harnessing the power of AI, we can improve our performance in various fields. Though some view it as a threat, I see it as an opportunity to enhance our professional and personal development. Why not make the most of it? For instance, even this article was initially written in Romanian and translated into English by ChatGPT.
