Follow the money: what’s happening to artist royalties (and why you should care)
This post summarizes reporting from public sources and is for informational purposes only; it is not legal advice.
Independent artists are all discovering the same thing: getting streams is not the same as getting paid. There are multiple, well-documented reasons why money doesn’t always reach creators - and why distributors and platforms often operate like a “black box.”
What the reporting shows (facts!)
• Unallocated / “black box” royalties exist. Collections and distributions sometimes leave money unassigned because metadata or ownership information is missing - those funds can sit in pools for years.
• Accounts and payouts are sometimes frozen or withheld. Platforms and distributors may withhold payments when they detect suspected fraud or irregular streaming patterns; that can leave legitimate creators without access to earnings while investigations proceed.
• Not all distributors or services provide advances like major labels. Some services (including selective aggregator programs) offer advances, but most DIY distributors do not - so the big checks you hear about are not typical for most independent artists.
• High-profile disputes show that artists and rights holders can be unpaid or under-accounted. Lawsuits and coverage in reputable outlets have documented instances where significant sums were disputed or withheld.
Why this matters
• The system routes DSP revenue to licensees (labels / aggregators) first; artists depend on transparent accounting and timely payouts from those intermediaries. When accounting is opaque, artists cannot verify whether they’re being paid correctly.
• Delays, freezes and opaque deductions make budgeting impossible for independent artists and crews, who already earn a tiny share per stream.
• The appearance of advances and big deals can mask a two-tier economy: a few acts receive significant guarantees while the majority navigate delayed, partial or missing payouts.
What creators can do
Collect & preserve everything: contracts, release metadata (ISRC/UPC), DSP reports, distributor statements, support tickets, screenshots of balances and freeze notices.
Request a full, itemised accounting from your distributor (per release / per DSP / per territory). Ask for recoupment calculations and gross-to-net flow.
Send a formal demand (set a firm deadline) for undisputed funds and documentation. Save proof of delivery.
Escalate to legal counsel if the distributor fails to provide documentation or withholds funds without a clear contractual reason.
Notify industry bodies (Merlin, IMPALA) and consider public, factual reporting if internal routes fail - but avoid unproven accusations.
Build direct revenue: Bandcamp, merch, sync licensing and patron models reduce dependency on opaque payout chains.
