The Doctrine of Union With Christ
Why It Is So Beautiful, Purposeful, Fulfilling, and Necessary
Introduction
Now a couple weeks into the 45 day Prayer Challenge, and God presented to me, “The Doctrine of Union With Christ” for this Resurrection Day. Union with Christ is not just some poetic idea. It is not just symbolic language. It is also not a theological decoration. Beloved, It is the very foundation of the believer’s life, identity, authority, and destiny, because everything God does in salvation, transformation, and eternal purpose flows through this union and finds its meaning in Christ Himself.
So many of us want and crave blessings, yet not many actually pursue union with Christ. So many of us want outcomes, often for the wrong reasons. Yet very few surrender identity.
Scripture does not present Christianity as admiration for Christ. Scripture reveals Christianity as participation in Christ. That’s worth a double take, Scripture does not present Christianity as admiration for Christ. Scripture reveals Christianity as participation in Christ.
Not near Christ, in Christ, becoming and remaining one with Him.
Now Let’s Eat Some Meat!
John 15:4-5 (AMPC): “Dwell in Me, and I will dwell in you. [Live in Me, and I will live in you.] Just as no branch can bear fruit of itself without abiding in (being vitally united to) the vine, neither can you bear fruit unless you abide in Me. I am the Vine; you are the branches. Whoever lives in Me and I in him bears much (abundant) fruit. However, apart from Me [cut off from vital union with Me] you can do nothing.”
Jesus did not offer mere improvement, Jesus offered union. Jesus did not say visit Me, Jesus said dwell in Me.
Union is life, while separation is barrenness. Jesus wasn't describing an occasional connection. Jesus was talking about a continuous existence, “being vitally united to”.
A branch does not try, nor can it even produce fruit on its own. It must remain connected to the vine.
Everything flows from union, nothing flows apart from it.
1 Corinthians 6:17 (AMPC) “But the person who is united to the Lord becomes one spirit with Him.”
Not similar in spirit, not inspired by, it is very definite, “one spirit.” This is the mystery, this is the beauty. Most importantly, this is The Power. God’s power, available to us and inside us! God does not merely guide and direct us, God joins us.
Galatians 2:20 (AMPC) “I have been crucified with Christ [in Him I have shared His crucifixion]; it is no longer I who live, but Christ (the Messiah) lives in me; and the life I now live in the body I live by faith in (by adherence to and reliance on and complete trust in) the Son of God, Who loved me and gave Himself up for me.”
Our old life ended, your new life is Christ. This is not an improvement. This is a complete exchange. Union means Christ’s life becomes our life. His victory becomes our victory. His righteousness becomes our standing before God.
The Context of This Teaching
From the beginning, God desired union, certainly not distance, yes, union.
Adam lost it, and Christ restored it.
The entire redemptive story moves toward this reality: God bringing man back into Himself through Christ, not as servants only, not just as observers, however as full participants in divine life through our spiritual union with Christ.
And here’s what makes this a Resurrection Day message, The Cross was not only for forgiveness, It was for union with Christ. The resurrection was not only for victory, It was for shared life with Christ.
Relevance to Today’s Believers
A great many believers do live around Christ. Yes, they attend, they listen, and they try.
Yet they struggle because they operate outside of union, attempting to produce spiritual results through human effort rather than abiding connection.
Union with Christ changes everything. It redefines identity, it eliminates striving, and it correctly establishes your purpose.
When we understand union, we stop trying to become something for God. We begin living from what Christ already is in us.
When we do that, transformation becomes natural, obedience becomes possible, and our purpose becomes clear.
Remain in Christ, because everything flows from there.
Supporting Scriptures
Ephesians 2:4-6 (AMPC) “But God–so rich is He in His mercy! Because of and in order to satisfy the great and wonderful and intense love with which He loved us, Even when we were dead (slain) by [our own] shortcomings and trespasses, He made us alive together in fellowship and in union with Christ; [He gave us the very life of Christ Himself, the same new life with which He quickened Him, for] it is by grace (His favor and mercy which you did not deserve) that you are saved (delivered from judgment and made partakers of Christ's salvation). And He raised us up together with Him and made us sit down together [giving us joint seating with Him] in the heavenly sphere [by virtue of our being] in Christ Jesus (the Messiah, the Anointed One).”
We are not trying, or striving to reach heaven by our efforts, weare seated there with Christ. God, “made us sit down together”. I have the visual of an old-school parent saying, “you better get in here and sit down with your brothers and sisters!”...My apologies, I digress.
Union with Christ positions us. Union with Christ secures us. And union with Christ defines us.
Colossians 3:3-4 (AMPC) “For [as far as this world is concerned] you have died, and your [new, real] life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, Who is our life, appears, then you also will appear with Him in [the splendor of His] glory.”
Christ is not part of our life, Christ is our life.
In Christ we are hidden, we are secure, and we are complete.
Ephesians 3:20 (AMPC) “Now to Him Who, by (in consequence of) the [action of His] power that is at work within us, is able to [carry out His purpose and] do superabundantly, far over and above all that we [dare] ask or think [infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, hopes, or dreams]”
That power is not external. It is at work within us, therefore it flows through union with Christ. I want to add, it was with this prayer in the 45 Day prayer Challenge that God, confirmed the importance of “The Doctrine of Union With Christ.”
Reflection and Spiritual Insight
Am I living from union or striving for results?
Do I see Christ as my source or my assistant?
Have I surrendered identity or am I still preserving self?
Do I remain in Him daily or visit Him occasionally?
Union is not a concept, It is a condition. Your life will reveal whether you are abiding.
Applications to Modern Faith
Abide Intentionally - Remain in Christ through daily surrender, prayer, and scripture, not as routine, rather as a vital connection.
Embrace Your New Identity in Christ - Stop defining ourselves or letting others by past, performance, or opinion; receive who we are in Christ, NOW.
Submit Fully - Union requires surrender; release control so Christ's life governs ours.
Walk in Obedience - Remember, obedience is the evidence of union, not the substitute for it.
Expect Divine Operation - Trust that God is working within us to accomplish what we cannot produce on your own, “[infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, hopes, or dreams]”
Five Checkpoints for Every Believer
Am I Abiding? “Dwell in Me, and I will dwell in you. [Live in Me, and I will live in you.] Just as no branch can bear fruit of itself without abiding in (being vitally united to) the vine, neither can you bear fruit unless you abide in Me.” (John 15:4 AMPC)
Abiding is not an occasional connection; it is continual dependence powered by our constant diligent connection. If we only turn to Christ in moments of need, we are visiting, not dwelling. A life that abides remains anchored in Him daily, drawing strength, direction, and stability from His presence.
Is My Identity in Christ? “I have been crucified with Christ [in Him I have shared His crucifixion]; it is no longer I who live, but Christ (the Messiah) lives in me; and the life I now live in the body I live by faith in (by adherence to and reliance on and complete trust in) the Son of God, Who loved me and gave Himself up for me.” (Galatians 2:20 AMPC)
Union reshapes our identity completely. We are no longer defined by our past, our failures, or even our natural strengths; Christ Himself is now our life. When our identity is settled in Him, insecurity weakens and purpose becomes steady.
Am I Walking in Union or Effort? “I am the Vine; you are the branches. Whoever lives in Me and I in him bears much (abundant) fruit. However, apart from Me [cut off from vital union with Me] you can do nothing.” (John 15:5 AMPC)
Effort strives; union flows. When we operate outside of Christ, even our best efforts can only produce little or no things of eternal value. Walking in union means relying on Christ's life within us rather than exhausting ourselves trying to produce results on our own.
Is My Life Producing Fruit? “But the fruit of the [Holy] Spirit [the work which His presence within accomplishes] is love, joy (gladness), peace, patience (an even temper, forbearance), kindness, goodness (benevolence), faithfulness, Gentleness (meekness, humility), self-control (self-restraint, continence). Against such things there is no law [that can bring a charge].” Galatians 5:22-23 (AMPC)
This kind of fruit is not something we manufacture; it is what the Spirit produces through a yielded life. When we are truly in union with Christ, His character begins to appear in us without strain, without performance, and without pretense. If these qualities are absent or inconsistent, the issue is not effort; it is whether we are truly yielding and remaining in Christ.
Do I Trust His Power Within Me? “Now to Him Who, by (in consequence of) the [action of His] power that is at work within us, is able to [carry out His purpose and] do superabundantly, far over and above all that we [dare] ask or think [infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, hopes, or dreams]” (Ephesians 3:20 AMPC)
God’s power is not distant; it is active within us through union with Christ. Trusting this means releasing self-reliance and expecting Christ to work beyond your limitations. What He accomplishes through you will always exceed what you could achieve by yourself.
Summary
Union with Christ is not optional, it is essential. It is not an advanced biblical teaching, it is a foundational transformative truth.
We were not saved to orbit Christ, we were saved to live in Him.
Everything God intends flows through this union. Transformation comes from it, purpose unfolds through it, and power operates within it.
Submit to Christ, trust Christ, obey Christ, and remain in Christ,
And as we do, God will not merely assist our life, He will, “[carry out His purpose and] do superabundantly, far over and above all that you dare ask or think, infinitely beyond your highest prayers, desires, thoughts, hopes, or dreams.”
This is the beauty, this is the purpose, this is the necessity.
