Perseverance: Stop Quitting in the Middle of What God Is Doing
Faith Starts the Journey and Perseverance Keeps Walking When the Journey Gets Hard
We talk about faith, we talk about blessing, we talk about breakthrough, and we talk about victory.
However Scripture repeatedly speaks about something we often push into the background:
Perseverance!
Jesus taught it, Paul preached it, James wrote about it, and the book of Hebrews commands it.
Why?
Because some things God has promised are not possessed by people who merely start, they are inherited by people who refuse to quit.
Jesus said:Matthew 24:13 (AMPC) “But he who endures to the end will be saved.”
That is not comfortable Christianity, that is ENDURING Christianity.
Paul declared in Galatians 6:9 (AMPC) “And let us not lose heart and grow weary and faint in acting nobly and doing right, for in due time and at the appointed season we shall reap, if we do not loosen and relax our courage and faint.”
Read those final words again, “IF WE DO NOT…”
There are harvests attached to perseverance.
Some of us keep asking God for another door when we need strength to keep walking toward the one He already showed us.
We ask God to remove the resistance.
Maybe we should also be praying, “Jesus, teach me to persevere THROUGH it.”
Through the waiting.
Through the disappointment.
Through the unanswered prayers.
Through opposition.
Through loneliness.
Through weariness.
Through seasons where obedience appears to be producing absolutely nothing.
James tells us why in James 1:3–4 (AMPC) “Be assured and understand that the trial and proving of your faith bring out endurance and steadfastness and patience. But let endurance and steadfastness and patience have full play and do a thorough work, so that you may be [people] perfectly and fully developed [with no defects], lacking in nothing.”
STOP DESPISING THE SEASON THAT IS TEACHING YOU HOW NOT TO QUIT!
Maybe the prayer today is not, “Jesus, get me out of this.”
Maybe it is, “Jesus, show me what You are calling me to persevere through, and give me the strength to remain faithful until You say this season is finished.”
Question For Today
What have you been asking Jesus to remove from your life when He may be asking you to persevere through it, and have you mistaken difficulty for permission to quit?
