The Minnesota Black Literary Legacy Gala is A statewide celebration honoring Black authors, elders, and literary legacy in Minnesota. The Minnesota Black Literary Legacy Gala is an annual cultural event in development, created to honor Black authors, literary elders, and institutions whose work has shaped Minnesota’s cultural landscape. Rooted in legacy, access, and intergenerational storytelling, the gala centers writers who are often overlooked — including first-generation, self-published, and community-based authors.

Planned as a formal awards ceremony with performances, vendors, and community recognition, the gala will serve as a long-term cultural tradition that affirms Black literary excellence across generations.

The Minnesota Black Literary Legacy Gala is currently in its foundational planning phase and is supported through a combination of sponsorships, donations, and partner collaborations.

Minnesota has a vibrant Black literary community — but few spaces dedicated to honoring its full legacy. The Minnesota Black Literary Legacy Gala exists to:

-Celebrate Black authors and literary elders whose contributions deserve formal recognition

-Create visibility for first-generation and self-published writers

-Bridge youth, adult, and elder storytelling across generations

-Build a statewide tradition rooted in Black literary heritage

This is not a one-time event. It is an investment in cultural memory, recognition, and future storytelling.

Dralandra Larkins is an award-winning spoken-word poet, educator, and author of Before I Lie (2025). A COMPAS teaching artist and recipient of the Loft Literary Center Teaching Artist Fellowship, she has also received support from the Minnesota State Arts Board. Her creative work centers healing, truth-telling, and cultural memory, shaped by her background as a social worker and community-based practitioner.

In addition to her artistic practice, Dralandra serves as an Equity Consultant at the Metropolitan Council, where she supports small businesses across the region. Her professional work focuses on equitable access, inclusive systems, and strategic partnership development, experience that directly informs her approach to building sustainable cultural initiatives. The Minnesota Black Literary Legacy Gala grows directly out of her years of teaching, performing, organizing, and working at the intersection of art, equity, and community infrastructure across Minnesota.
