Why Desktop Live Streamers Need to Turn on YouTube Gifts Right Now

Oct 20, 2026

Hey everyone!

When YouTube first rolled out Gifts and Jewels, a lot of us who stream using multi-camera setups, Mac/PC encoders, and traditional horizontal video basically ignored it. It felt like a mobile-only experiment strictly meant to compete with vertical feeds like TikTok.

Over the weekend, that quietly changed.

YouTube has officially rolled out Gifts to desktop horizontal live streams. That means anyone watching your standard stream on a computer browser can now interact with gifts directly in the chat.

Here is why this is a welcome shift and how it actually works behind the scenes:

The Gamification of Live Chat
Super Chats have been the standard for years, and while they're fantastic, they can feel a bit formal. Asking someone to drop $5, $20, or $50 puts people on the spot. Gifts, on the other hand, bring in that playful, gamified energy YouTube teased at Made on YouTube.

Viewers purchase bundles of Jewels, pick an animated gift, and pop it into chat. It feels casual, interactive, and fun—lowering the barrier for community members who want to support without making a massive statement.

The Math: Jewels vs. Rubies
The conversion formula is refreshingly straightforward:

  • 2 Jewels = 1 Ruby

  • 1 Ruby = 1¢ USD

So if someone drops a 1,000-Jewel gift in your chat, you receive 500 Rubies, which cashes out to exactly $5.00. It's micro-monetization, but over a two-hour stream with an engaged crowd, those small amounts add up fast.

Integrating with Your Production
For those of us running broadcast software, third-party overlay tools like Social Stream Ninja and Streamlabs are already updating to catch these gift triggers. That means you can map them to custom sound effects, on-screen visual alerts, or even physical studio lighting changes when someone drops a gift in chat.

The Next Step: Paid Hype on VODs
There’s also a bigger picture here. At Made on YouTube, they announced that Jewels won't stay trapped in live streams. YouTube is actively preparing to tie Jewels into regular long-form video uploads through Paid Hype. Soon, viewers will be able to spend Jewels to boost videos from eligible channels (between 500 and 500,000 subscribers) up the leaderboard, which also converts directly to Rubies for the creator.

How to Turn It On
If you have fan funding enabled on your channel, take 10 seconds today to make sure this is live:

  1. Go to YouTube Studio.

  2. Click Earn on the left menu.

  3. Select Supers & gifts.

  4. Accept the Virtual Items agreement and confirm the Gifts toggle is switched ON.

Don't leave easy community engagement on the table!

Thanks as always for supporting the channel and being part of this journey. Drop a comment below and let me know if your audience is mostly mobile or desktop!

Catch you later,

Doug
