You Don’t Need More Gear, You Need This ...

You Don’t Need More Gear, You Need This Instead

Nov 10, 2025

Hey, it’s Don.

I’ve been thinking about something that keeps a lot of creators stuck:

We assume the next camera, lens, backpack, workflow app, or editing template is the missing piece.

But the truth is way simpler.

Most of us already have enough gear. What we’re actually missing is a repeatable creative system, something we can show up to even when we’re tired, unsure, or uninspired.

Here’s a framework I’ve been using that might help you too:

  1. One Location Stop trying to find the perfect spot. Pick a single place you can access easily. Your room. A park bench. Your kitchen table. That’s your “set.”

  2. One Camera Setup. Choose one combination and commit: Camera + one lens + a mic. No switching mid-shoot. Simplicity = consistency.

  3. One Story Per Session: You don’t need to tell your whole brand story every time. Tell one moment. One lesson. One small truth from your week.

  4. Publish Imperfect Not sloppy. Just honest. Polished comes later. Flow comes first.

That’s it. Four rules. Follow them for 30 days and your work will evolve faster than any gear upgrade ever could.

I know this because I’ve done the “new gear = new me” cycle more times than I care to admit. It never changed the work. What changed the work was deciding to work.

So here’s the challenge, if you want it:

Create something this week using only what’s already in your bag.

Focus on story, not setup.

If you want, reply and tell me what you made. I’ll actually look at it.

More soon, Don

P.S. If you’re in a season of trying to rediscover your creativity, same. We’re in the water together. Keep going.
