Why am I doing this?

May 12, 2026

I want to tell you something about why I built this: because I think it matters that you know.

I spent decades as an NHS Matron and registered nurse. I knew hospitals, I knew systems, I knew how to get things done. I thought I understood what caring for someone looked like.

Then one phone call turned my world upside down.

My sibling had a life-threatening event. Suddenly I wasn't a healthcare professional anymore, I was a frightened sister sitting in a hospital corridor wondering what on earth was going to happen next. And when the immediate crisis passed and we got to the other side of that long, exhausting hospital stay, I found myself completely lost.

I couldn't find the information I needed. I couldn't find emotional support that understood what I was going through. I couldn't find anyone who could just help me navigate a system that, from the outside, felt impossibly complicated. And I kept thinking "I've worked in this system my whole career. If I'm struggling this much, what must this feel like for everyone else?"

That thought never left me. It turned into a quiet vow - that I was going to do something about it.

Because it isn't right. Carers give everything, and they deserve so much better than being left to figure it all out alone.

That's why Care Without Burnout exists. I built it to be everything I needed and couldn't find. And now it's here, for you.
