Elizabeth River Ferry

Jun 16, 2025

Dinnie in,

Good morning, afternoon, evening everyone! And welcome to yet another Bloggie! On today's post we're gonna be talking about a ride on the Elizabeth River Ferry.

Some of y'all may know that I've been in Portsmouth a lot lately because I'm currently Coworking at Bloom, but that hasn't stopped me from heading on over to Norfolk once in a while!

All I have to do is walk on down all the way to the end of High St and hop on the Elizabeth River Ferry and ta-daaaaah!!! I go from Portsmouth to Norfolk lickety split!

I've quite enjoyed my past couple of trips on the ferry but I can tell you riding it when it's raining isn't the most ideal if you like the views on the top deck. I digress because I'm getting ahead of myself.

Now, in order to ride the ferry, you must pay for the ferry. Although it's not free (except during certain special occasions), it won't break the bank either.

You can get a one way ticket for $2.00 or a round trip for $4.00. If you really want to make a whole day out of it and take it a little further, you can get a Go Pass for $4.50 and have unlimited rides on the ferry and the HRT buses.

You can either purchase a ticket from the machine on High St, or you can pay cash on the ferry itself. If you buy a ticket at the machine, you can use card or cash and select different HRT riding options but if you buy a ticket on the ferry, make sure you have exact change because they only have cash and no change is given.

There are a total of three stops for the Elizabeth River Ferry: High St (Portsmouth)-> North Landing (Portsmouth) -> Waterside District (Norfolk). It continuously goes around these three stops on a thirty minute circuit so if you miss a ride, you can catch the next one in a half hour.

It's a fairly smooth ride and the temperature on the ferry is a lot cooler than on land. There are two decks with the bottom deck being fully covered so it's better to travel here when it's raining and the top deck allows you to get some fresh air while riding. And just as an FYI, if you sit at the backseat of the top deck, you may get some wisps of water on you.

I think the best time to ride is late Spring/early Summer before it gets blazing hot and right after chillier winter temps. It's really enjoyable to just sit and watch the waves and the boats and buildings roll by on a nice, clear day.

I pray to see some themed ferry rides in the future [Hampton Roads Transit, I'm available if you need a host!]. I think it would be awesome to have a host to entertain guests who are riding the ferry. A pirate theme would be awesome to just have a group of cosplayers do their thing and turn the ferry ride into a pirate adventure! Or maybe a princess day or a zoo themed exploration! I think there's potential to make the ferry riding experience something truly unique to Hampton Roads!

So tell me, have you ridden the Elizabeth River Ferry before? If not, please do as it's definitely on the list of must do Hampton Roads activities!
