As some of you know, I enjoy narration. I love taking what I see or learn from film and finding the life lesson within it. Every day is a school day, after all. There’s always something to learn when we step back and look at the bigger picture.
One of my favorite things is noticing how deeply human some of these stories really are. These scripts are written by people who understand how to paint truth into a story. You can see some of the most beautiful and meaningful stories through television and film, if you’re willing to look deeper.
I often draw from The Walking Dead, because it’s about survival, strangers meeting along the journey, each with a story to tell and their own reason for still being alive. Somehow, through trial and pain, their souls become knit together. They learn to survive together.
And of course, I draw encouragement from it, how could you not?
The Lesson in the Chaos ⚔️
Two notable characters in the show are Beth and Maggie, two sisters who grew up on a farm, took in a group of strangers, and learned to carry each other’s burdens until the end.
They are constantly fighting for their lives. Every day brings a new threat, something trying to break them, divide them, or wear them down. But the only way they ever make it through is together.
They can make it together. But they can only make it together. Because in a world that dark, survival takes more than unity, it takes truth and accountability.
It takes encouragement that runs both ways… never just one. Everyone has to have each other’s back, not just when it comes to fighting off danger, but also when it comes to being honest. Sometimes that means being the one to speak truth in a moment of panic, even when it hurts.
A Scene That Stuck With Me
There’s one moment I’ll never forget. Maggie is crying over her husband, he’s sick, and there’s nothing she can do to help him. She breaks down, sobbing to her sister through the quarantine door.
And through her own pain, Beth says firmly:
“We don’t get to cry. There’s no time for that. We all have jobs to do.”
It wasn’t cold. It was truth.
And the one hearing it knew that.
So Maggie wiped her tears, steadied herself, and did the next thing.
But later, chaos breaks out again. Fear takes over, and this time, Beth, the one who had spoken that truth before, is the one panicking. And that’s when Maggie turns to her and says:
“There’s no time for this! We all have jobs to do, so do your job!”
🗡️ Iron Sharpens Iron With the Sword of Truth
I carry that lesson with me when I think about what it means to be part of the one body of Christ. So many different people, all brought together, yet all belonging to the same body.
And in the household of God, iron sharpens iron.
One moment, you’re the one giving strength.
The next, you’re the one who needs it.
It’s not about leaning on one leader or one particular person. It’s about the Spirit working through all of us, uplifting one another, reminding each other of truth, and helping each other keep moving forward.
We’re meant to be knit together: forgiving one another, being patient and long-suffering with one another, protecting one another, speaking truth to one another, caring for one another, watching out for one another.
We’re called to fight with each other, not against each other.
To carry one another’s burdens.
To survive, together.
Because the sword that sharpens us isn’t violence or pride, it’s truth.

If there’s one thing The Walking Dead reminds me of, it’s that we’re built for community.
We’re meant to strengthen one another, not just when life is calm, but especially when it’s chaotic.
And sometimes that chaos comes a little too close for comfort.
There will be moments meant to divide us, distract us, weaken us, or keep us fighting and angry.
But in those moments, we have to remind ourselves, and our brothers and sisters in Christ, scattered across the world …
"There's no time for chaos and fighting. We all have jobs to do. Do the next thing."
Whether it’s a friend, a spouse, a sibling, or even a stranger you meet along the road, remember this:
sometimes you’ll be the one giving courage, and sometimes you’ll be the one receiving it.
We can make it together.
But we can only make it together.
That’s how we’ll make it through, family…
