Learning Is Not So Bad…Testing Is Where It Gets Real
We all love when lessons feel easy, when the Word of God makes sense and the path feels clear.
But the true test of what we’ve learned often comes in moments of pressure, when what we know is tried by fire.
The test isn’t meant to destroy us, but to reveal what has taken root inside of us.
Will our answers match what we’ve learned, what was written, what was given?
Or will our answers sound entirely different, though we make them out to be the truth?
When the testing comes, it becomes clear who has truly learned from the Teacher and who has not,
because the answers always reveal the student.
“Too Easy!” A Lesson from My Son
It’s hardly the lesson that’s difficult to learn, it’s the testing.
But what about the testing makes it so hard?
If you paid attention to the lesson, if you followed the instructions, then the test, as my youngest son used to say, is “too easy!”
He would say this all the time when he was in first grade. After two weeks of lessons, I’d give him a test.
As he sat at the table, his little fingers gripping the pen, I’d watch him go down the questions one by one, writing in the answers and shouting, “Too easy!”
Then one day, I didn’t hear those words.
I asked, “How are you doing, Papa?”
But he seemed frustrated, angry even.
Whenever he got an answer wrong, he was hard on himself.
I used to tell him:
“It’s okay. Sometimes we have to go back and see what we missed.
That’s not a bad thing, it’s good for us to be sure.”
He would give me a snarky look, clearly annoyed by my encouragement.
It took everything in me not to laugh, because I understood exactly what was happening.
He loved when he knew the right answers.
But the moment he realized he didn’t have them all, frustration took over.
The Growth That Comes with Time
My youngest is a lot like me in that sense.
I used to get frustrated with myself, You should know this!, and then immediately wonder, How did I miss this? I don’t even remember learning it!
That mindset shifted as I grew into maturity.
Now, I see the same process unfolding in my son.
He’s in his fifth year of schooling, and I can tell he’s learning to give himself grace too. He doesn’t react the same way anymore.
When I go over his work, I mark anything incorrect in red and tell him:
“It’s okay. Go back and see what you missed. Read it again. Study it.”
Sometimes, he’ll look back at a page, and before his eyes even finish scanning it, what he forgot comes back to remembrance.
Other times, he has to re-read it carefully, and then he’ll say, “Oh yeah!”
I remind him that wisdom means being willing to admit when you need to go back and study something again.
That way, when the test comes, you’ll be ready.
The Walk of Faith and the Mercy of the Teacher
That has been my walk with the Lord as I learn.
The tests used to be so hard for me.
When I failed, I would beat myself up, and sometimes take it out on others.
But things are different now.
If I fail a test, I simply go back and see what I missed.
Then, when I’m ready, the Teacher gives the test again.
I don’t think I’ll ever call out “too easy!”… because no test feels easy when you’re the one on the hot seat, finding out whether you paid attention to the lesson at all.
Instead, I thank the Lord for being with me, and for encouraging me along the way.
When the Test Comes Again… Remember This
Every test we face with the Lord is an invitation to grow closer to Him, not to shrink back in shame.
If we miss the mark, He doesn’t cast us aside, He patiently invites us to review the lesson again.
In His mercy, the Teacher gives the test once more,
until we are strengthened by understanding, not weakened by failure.
So if you find yourself in another test today, don’t lose heart.
Go back.
See what you missed.
And remember, He’s right there beside you, guiding you through it all.

Final Encouragement
If you’re in a season of testing, don’t mistake it for abandonment.
The Teacher hasn’t left the room, He’s watching with love, waiting for you to remember what He’s already taught you.
Have you ever looked into how a sword is forged?
It goes through a heating process, then hammering, then shaping.
The smith must remain with the blade the entire time it’s being forged, carefully repeating the cycle of heating, hammering, and shaping until it’s ready.
Then comes the test of strength.
After the basic shape is formed, the blade undergoes another intense process, quenching to harden it, and tempering to soften it just enough.
These opposing forces give it both toughness and flexibility, making it sharp, strong, and ready for use.
And when the testing finally comes, the sword reveals the skill of the one who forged it.
It is valuable because of the process it endured, and because the smith never left its side.
So it is with you.
You’re being refined, not rejected.
Strengthened, not shattered.
The testing of your faith is proof that you are being shaped into something sharp, enduring, and full of purpose.
Keep going.
You’re not failing, you’re being forged.
And when the testing comes again, it won’t break you… it will reveal just how strong you’ve become in the hands of the Master.
