Imagine losing everything: your home, your livelihood, even your identity. This is the reality that former business journalist Peter Mitchell has endured for the past seven years. Born in England in 1968, Peter's family emigrated to Canada when he was six months old. Despite leading a healthy and productive life, he never invested in Canadian citizenship—an oversight he would grow to deeply regret. Seven years ago, Peter returned to England to complete research for a biography of his great-great grandfather, Sir John Kirk. As Secretary and Director of the Ragged School Union and Shaftesbury Society, Sir John championed the causes of impoverished and disadvantaged children in Victorian London. Peter’s plans were shattered upon arrival. He discovered the British government had no proof of his existence. However, the government had substantial evidence of another Peter Mitchell—a convicted paedophile. Despite his innocence, Peter was mistakenly placed on the Sex Offender Registry. Though he has been officially absolved of any criminal activity, it remains a devastating blow that continues to hamper his efforts to rebuild. Rendered homeless and unable to return to Canada without citizenship, Peter found himself shackled by support systems that promote assistance but often ensnare individuals in an unforgiving cycle of poverty. He shared those experiences in "Rude Awakenings from Sleeping Rough." With the hard-hitting honesty of a seasoned reporter and the strength of a survivor, he provided an unflinching account that sheds light on the struggles of life on the streets and exposes the corruption and exploitation within the charities meant to support the vulnerable. He lays bare the physical and sexual violence, mental abuse, and dehumanisation that he and others have suffered from “caring hands.” Despite repeated attempts to rebuild, the pervasive failures of the system and the enduring stigma surrounding homelessness, amplified by persistent rumours and false accusations of paedophilia, have repeatedly thwarted his hopes of finding stable employment and a place to call home. He again finds himself jobless, homeless, and penniless. Refusing to let adversity define him, Peter is utilizing his writing talent to secure writing contracts, rebuild his life and ultimately fund the expensive process of emigrating back to Canada. With experience in traditional and digital media, Peter excels at creating impactful content. His greatest talent lies in infusing humanity into his writing, surpassing the sterility of corporate and AI-generated content.
