Should you take on lower-paying work?

Should you take on lower-paying work?

Apr 15, 2024

Many professional writers and creators won’t like this post. Oh well.🤷‍♀️

Which of these scenarios is a “low-paying” writing job?

A. A 300-to 500-word blog post that pays $100, is research only and takes 40 minutes to write.💰Rate: $150/hour

B. A $1/word magazine assignment of 400 words that requires an interview, research, takes two hours to complete and then goes through three rounds of edits and fact-checking questions for an additional 90 minutes of work.💰Rate:~$115/hour

C. A 500-word assignment pays $50 but takes you 25 minutes to research and write and has no edits.💰Rate: $120/hour

D. A 1,000-word assignment pays $300 takes two hours and has 30 minutes of edits.💰Rate: $120/hour

🎯 My point? What looks like a low pay rate for some might be an easy, quick assignment for others.

They can earn a high hourly rate and fill in the gaps during slower seasons in the business.I’m *advocating for low rates—most freelancers deserve a raise— unfortunately, the rates often decreased in years.

But, in today’s competitive marketplace, it’s important to think critically about when you need to take an assignment to pay the bills and when to hold out for one that looks like it pays more.

Not accounted for on any of these? The time and energy spend finding the freelance job, contacting the manager, and completing all of the paperwork.

Oh and it’s rare that one has back-to-back assignments lined up or that you don’t need a mental and energy break between writing assignments.

✅Decide what works for you and your business.

✅Don’t stress rate-shaming if you feel good about the business you’re running.
