Hi, re: Joy McLaughlin
I found your site when researching genealogy info. My great aunt, my grandfather’s sister, was Denver Joy McLaughlin, (her birth name was Denver). Some things in the census records were not true, such as your article states she lived with her widowed mother. Her mother wasn’t a widow. She ditched her husband, my great grandfather, and he ended up in Seattle. My dad told me the family stories, but most of the relatives with knowledge of this were really old or dead by the time I would have had interest in her gruesome death. Weird to say thanks but thank you. It helped me put some pieces to the story in place and know where my great grandmother and aunts were located in LA. I had lost track when they left Texas to become movie stars; which never happened. The family believed she was murdered, not a suicide, and her rich boyfriend paid the LAPD off - ala L.A. Confidential. If anyone has more info or some long lost relative also stumbles across this, I’d be happy to hear from you. Fascinating site! Cheers.
Hi! I apologize for my tardy reply. I'm glad to hear that my post provided some info for you about Joy. I was skeptical about her death at first too. Joy's case was investigated by the L.A. County Sheriff's department homicide bureau. They have always had a stellar reputation. Usually police who can be bribed are in vice units, or somewhere other than homicide. Homicide detectives are a different breed. They take each death personally, in that they are driven to solve it. The two detectives assigned to this case, Garner Brown, and Herman Leaf, have spotless reputations. We all know that New Year's Eve is a mixed bag. For some, it is renewal, for others it can be a depressing time to review your life. Especially if you are not where you hoped to be. I think maybe that was the issue for Joy. A beautiful woman in a town with thousands of beautiful women. Trying to have a Hollywood career is a tough road. I will let you know if I get any updated information, or if a relative reaches out. Thanks again for your support. I appreciate it. Best -- Joan

I was on Ancestry.com looking for various Powers relatives when a "Baby Borgia" Alsa Thompson newspaper article came up. Having read it, I was fascinated to know what came of her after that craziness! Imagine: Epilepsy as a cause for murderous behavior!? Eugenics is also what Planned Parenthood is ALL about originally! YIKES!!! Anyway, glad you filled in all the details on her life after trial! Thanks! :)
