Explaining The Bee’s name isn’t complicated. She started as a doodle. And as I developed The Bee comics and her personality — a bee who is always in work attire and is hyper-focused, she simply didn’t need a name. Her very existence defined her. She is a bee. The Bee. No other characters would be similar to her in personality and focus.
As The Bee comics grew, characters appeared with actual descriptive names: Lady Bug, Mr. Bumble, Dr. Mason-Bee.
When a character is truly unique they are described only with the definite article “The”: The Cicada, The Possum, The Squirrel, The Sloth.
Occasionally, when The Bee breaks through the “Fourth Wall” to interact with us mere humans, I’m never Denise Massey; I’m “The Artist.” And you, dear reader? To the ever-polite Bee, you are “Ma’ams and Sirs.” Please read that again in a Southern accent. Welcome to The Bee’s world.
