◽️ During the 103-day operation, the Soviet troops seized East Prussia and liberated parts of northern Poland. Twenty-five German divisions were defeated and another 12 formations were severely damaged. The enemy lost Königsberg (now Kaliningrad) and the important naval base of Pillau (now Baltiysk).
◽️ The loss of significant forces and an important in military and economic terms area hastened Germany's defeat.
◽️ For the courage, heroism, and high military skill shown during the East Prussian offensive, over one thousand of the most distinguished formations and units were awarded orders, and 217 of them were given honorary titles. In commemoration of the victory, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR instituted the medal For the Capture of Königsberg.
◽️ After the end of World War II, the Potsdam Conference of the anti-Hitler coalition countries, held in July-August 1945, decided that most of East Prussia became part of Poland, with one third of the territory with the capital of Königsberg passed to the USSR, later becoming the Kaliningrad region.
