I’m thrilled you’re a fan and a theatre-thinker. Thank you for your desire to sit in the music, the words, the humanizing feelings that beg for your compassion - I live for that. ⚠️⚠️⚠️Sensitive Topic Warning: I had a very close call with a shooter inside an Air-Bnb I was renting on tour in 2023. He shot through the walls of my bedroom, and all through the house, inside and out. After escaping out the bathroom window, and successfully making it past police lines, my husband walked me through the steps of radical acceptance. I realized I have no time to waste anymore; the art I have always wanted to make, the things I've always wanted to speak out loud, the journey I always wanted to illustrate, and the characters that have burned inside me needed to be released before they expired along with my body. I want to create art that gives you the courage to love yourself and others through the most volatile times. To be comfortable criticizing, analyzing, but not tying hatred to it. To reach for compassion and forgiveness and understanding, while having the courage to create boundaries, let go, and heal from torment. To remind yourself of your significance, and that what you do and say matters not just to others, but to yourself. I want to create art that gives you the gift that radical acceptance gave me. The courage to spend time with your shame, guilt, fear, mistakes, challenges, horrors....and give rapid grace to yourself. You've heard the saying-"you have one life, don't waste it." I believe if you can start giving grace to yourself, you can start giving grace to others. I also think happiness is a choice. It often doesn't feel safe to be happy. When we've been traumatized, shoved into our defensiveness by survival mode's bullying push, happiness is something we avoid for survival's sake. We think we actually can control our outcomes, our lives, our destinations, our survival, if we put the hard helmet on, criticize our lives, bully ourselves into not making mistakes, prove ourselves right by proving ourselves wrong, blame ourselves without forgiveness, fear everyone and everything until we enter a state of paralysis or cruise control. We think we should remain shrewd, hyper vigilant, and never put our guard down because we are horrified if someone catches us being unproductive, mortified if we don't reach our goals before we die, or sometimes even scared that we'll be physically or mentally hurt again. Valid. But I believe when we go through the phases of radical acceptance and face the mirror, we finally frame what is, so that we can now devise a plan to move on from it. A practice. A graceful practice to choose happiness. There's always time to decide that it's safe to be happy. To know happiness is to also know pain and accept it. It coexists. To know happiness is to move beyond a belief that it's only rewarded to us and instead choosing to believe it's ours right now. It's ours to choose. I believe we all have that seed of happiness inside of us, but most of us forget it's ours to water, and we very much think it's someone else's to take. It is yours. The art that I love most is the art that makes me spend time with myself, dissected what makes humans human. Art that doesn't hold grudges, but acknowledges that most "evil" is just behavior birthed from a fear that we aren't safe or loved, which results in over-protection, angst, depression, self-loathing, or even violence. Radical acceptance can make our conscious life, before we die, much more fulfilling, adventurous, and full of love and connection. It's yours to grasp, and yes, it means you have to move on from an old identity, an identity desperately clinging on for dear life of the illusion that it's kept you safe and in control up until now. You have to choose to see the inspiring parts of life, or else you'll wilt. Which was your greatest fear to begin with....wilting. So don't. Don't wilt. Explore what emotions make us human, understand the survival mechanisms that keep us on edge, fall in love with self-soothing understanding, and practice extending compassion, creating healthy boundaries, and not feeling guilt, shame, or separation while witnessing your own becoming. Give people the time they need to grow, give yourself the time you need to grow. We don't have much time. So choose to grasp hold of the time that is yours.
