War Drums: Rage Efficiency & “How Many Do I Really Need?”

Oct 07, 2025

imageShort answer: More Drums always help, but returns taper off. For most of 6 marches-teams, you’ll feel the first big step by 4 Drums. Hitting a two-turn improvement across most marches generally takes longer fights and 5–6 Drums.

Why this article?

You’ve probably seen plenty of War Drums breakdowns. Each has trade-offs:

  • In-game tests are noisy—you can’t isolate War Drums, and you can’t repeat enough trials.

  • Hand theoretical calculations isolate variables, but often assume best-case scenarios and ignore overlapping procs. Can also be biased and countain cherry-picking.

  • Our simulations aim to bridge the gap: we isolate the War Drums factor, run large trials, and allow realistic overlaps (e.g., Horn + Drums + talent procs all in the same turn). The randomness looks like the game.

One more wrinkle: Drums don’t spread rage evenly among all marches. Each proc buffs the wearer and two random marches, so multiple Drums can still create disparities—one march can get showered in rage while another gets almost none. The sim treats these two bonus targets as fully random each time, just like real combat.

Is this 100% accurate? No. It can’t be. Real fights add chaos—swarming, retreats, external rage buffs, enemy debuffs/silences, etc. But this setup gets us much closer than either pure theory or ad-hoc testing.

Methodology

  • Trials: 10,000 simulations per scenario.

  • Team: 6 marches, always attacking (directly on target).

Outputs: Mean time to complete 2, 3, and 4 skill cycles
(measured T+1 → T+1, with rage checked at end of turn; S1 casts at the start of T+1 and S1 resets rage).

  • Baseline: All marches wear Horn.

  • Scenarios: Add War Drums to 1 through 6 marches (one new Drum per scenario).

What’s modeled (rage sources & rules)

  • Theoretical Rage Model, with a rage cap at 220. (probably not 100% accurate but by far the most common used)

  • Base rage from basic attacks.

  • Rage requirements per pairing.

  • Rage talent points (including Rejuvenate and Feral Nature).

  • Horn: 30% proc chance.

  • War Drums: 10% proc chance with 3-second cooldown; each proc grants +50 rage to the wearer + two random allies.

  • Commander-specific perks where relevant (e.g., Liu Che expertise, Arthur's combo attacks...).

What’s not modeled

  • Rage from counter attack.

  • External rage sources (Trajan, William, etc.).

  • External rage reductions/silence effects.

  • Tactical behavior (back and forth, breaking off, re-targeting) beyond “always attacking.”

imageHigh Level Findings

  • Every additional Drums reduces average cycle time—no surprises there.

  • Drums benefit more the slowest rage engine—no surprises there.

  • The first 2–4 Drums deliver the best marginal gains

BUT

For more efficiency, we need to look at setups that deliver a team-wide average reduction large enough across most marches.

  • To have a chance to shorten one full turn for most marches (the majority of your six) with more consistency, you generally need around 4 Drums—especially if you care about shorter engagements

  • To have a chance to shorten two full turns for most marches with more consistency, you typically need longer fights (think >25s) and 5–6 Drums.

So… how many Drums should you run?

If slots are tight:

  • Run 2–3 Drums. Prioritise to equip either commanders doing combo attacks for higher proc chances, and/or your slowest rage engine pairings to assure them to receive the rage buff themselves.

Best value / knee of the curve:

  • From 4 Drums. This is where many 6 marches-teams see a consistent chance of one-turn improvement

All-in optimization:

  • 5–6 Drums. You’re chasing to reach some two-turns improvements for a large share of the team in longer engagements.

None ?

  • Also a possibilty to only combine Horns with damage-enhancer accessories.

Discussion & limitations

These sims answer the mathematical part of the question in a controlled setting. Real battles add context: swarms, resets, disengages, external rage buffs, enemy debuffs, and your own playstyle.

  • We modeled six marches, but the intuition scales. For three marches, “optimal” converges to three Drums quickly; as team size grows, team-size minus one or two is a reasonable rule of thumb depending on your goals and fight length.

  • Targeting inefficiency: Commanders like Qin may receive Drums and have not an impact on him for such short battles. That slightly dilutes Drums’ teamwide efficiency.

  • We assumed Horn on everyone. If that surprises you… well, I don't know where you've been the last months or years but it’s the long-standing meta, proven over and over. At the only exception of Qin

  • This article is not a Horn/Drums vs. Horn/Ring power ranking. It isolates Drums quantity assuming Horns are already in play. As for now, there is no strong evidence at all that Horn/drums is the best accessory combination. It is not about choosing Drums over Horn either.

Closing

If you made it this far—thanks for reading. I hope this helps you decide how many Drums to run and where to put them.

Good luck, and if you chose the war drums path, may your procs line up when it counts.
