DarahRouge Drama Club Kids is an inclusive drama club running in Jakarta for four years. Over the years we have had a range of different neuro-diversities work with us. We are all different but the one thing that brings us together is that we like the work in making theater. And it is through theater making that tolerance, critical thinking skills, the ability to articulate and reflect on our work, empathy and creativity are imbedded in the work. Our shows are devised with young people writing, directing, doing the lighting and taking part in all aspects of creative decision making.
“The drama club has not only taught the children about acting, lighting, creativity, imagination, politics, self esteem, teamwork, commitment and responsibility. But this little drama club has also taught the children about something more profound, that is compassion & love for others.” Review from Voices of Children, for Children who Flee.
After a years break due to the pandemic, we started again in March 2021. Zoom posed some new challenges for us including the actual speed at which we can create work discus ideas on line and devise. The intensity at which we would we rehearse was greatly affected as the kids here are still doing all day classes online.
This show, “Billy’s Big Brilliant Adventure Through the Beautiful Telescope of Zoom”, is still a devised performance. We started off with exploring the zoom stage, exploring different lighting states and then different snap lens, then group writing, devising scenes and finally putting the script together and rehearsing together. The play is snippets of different perspectives - at times quite poignant, at other times hilarious.
This show is suitable for all ages. We hope you enjoy the show. We hope you will turn your camera’s on at the end and join us for a dance and conversation.
