Embracing Sabbath Rest: A Gift, Not a Burden

Feb 14, 2025

imageThis Sunday, I’m taking a Sabbath day of rest—no work, no social media (which, let’s be honest, is part of work for me!), and no daily blog writing. The first time I tried this, I was blown away by the benefits—physically, mentally, and spiritually. Rest is a gift, and I’ve come to treasure it.

So, what will I be doing instead? All the things that feel restful! Bible reading, slow and intentional Bible study, and chipping away at my 700-page mammoth book on foundational Christian theology (pray for me, haha!). I’ll also be spending time with family and catching up on things that get lost in the week’s busyness—like diving into Faith Womack’s Patreon blogs from How to Faith a Life.

I don’t take this day of rest for granted, and I’m grateful I can take one in this season of life. But here’s the thing—I don’t see it as a legalistic or mandatory exercise. The Sabbath law was part of Israel’s civil law under the old covenant, and while it was required for them, I am not sinning if I miss a Sabbath one week.

Speaking of which—let’s talk about civil, ceremonial, and moral laws for a second. The civil and ceremonial laws, including the penalties for them, were part of ancient Israel’s theocracy. As new covenant believers, we are not bound by those laws today. However, the moral law, such as the Decalogue (a fancy way of saying the Ten Commandments! 😉), still applies because it reflects God’s heart and His core values.

What About You?

Do you take a Sabbath? If so, how often? What do you do (or not do), and how has it benefited you?

Drop a comment—I’d love to hear your thoughts! And if you don’t have a Sabbath rhythm yet, maybe this is your sign to give it a try! 😉
