It used to be that people would send postcards to friends and family as a way to include them in their travels and share the experience of a different surrounding/culture/adventure. While it is not as common as it used to be, I still do receive postcards from my friends both while they travel and while at home. Knowing that I was on their mind really does mean a lot to me.
So what do you write on a postcard?
Having the limited space of the back of a postcard forces us to simplify a message down to just a few sentences. This really does take away the pressure to fill up a full page of stationery when we may not have much to write about. Even a brief message of: "Wish you were here!" can bring a smile to someone's face knowing that they were on your mind.
Here is a brief list of what I have written on the back of postcards:
Something funny overheard in a public space
A brief update on my day/week
A dumb joke
A funny or special memory of time spent with whomever you're sending the card to
Pen and ink sketches of flowers in my yard
A quote from a book, poetry, or article you liked
A playlist of my current 10 favorite songs
A simple recipe
A 55 Word Story - try it, those are fun!
A QR code to scan that displays a message
I'd love to hear your ideas on what to write on a postcard! Feel free to share in a comment.
