🚀 Just Built: Distraction Blocker — Focus Timer for Chrome! ✨

Sep 02, 2025

Hey everyone! 👋

I'm excited to share something I've been working on that's been a game-changer for my productivity — Distraction Blocker with Focus Timer, a Chrome extension that helps you stay focused without being overly restrictive.

Install from here: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/distraction-blocker-with/nmdegdfncjhaiapngoohabcgoeihoipn

What makes it special? 🌟

Unlike other blockers that are all-or-nothing, this one gives you gentle nudges when you've spent enough time on distracting sites:

🟦 Smart floating button on the right edge showing your remaining time

🧭 Slide-in sidebar with quick controls (no fumbling through settings!)

⏱️ Per-site daily limits (1-1440 minutes) — YouTube gets 30min, Twitter gets 15min, etc.

🔔 Polite full-page modal when time's up (not aggressive blocking!)

☕ 15-minute break option when you need a quick mental reset

♻️ One-click timer reset if you're being productive

The best part? 🧠

It uses heartbeat tracking — so even if you're deep in a YouTube rabbit hole and don't switch tabs, it'll gently remind you when your time is up. No more "how did I spend 2 hours here?!" moments.

Built with privacy in mind 🔐

  • Zero data collection — everything stays on your device

  • No accounts, no tracking, no analytics

  • Manifest V3 compliant (future-proof!)

  • CSP-compliant (secure by design)

The UI is clean and non-intrusive. You set your limits once, and it quietly does its job in the background. When time's up, you get options: continue, reset today's timer, take a break, or set a new limit. It's about conscious choice, not forced restriction.

Why I built this 💭

I tried every focus app and blocker out there, but they were either too aggressive (complete blocking) or too passive (easy to ignore). I wanted something that would make me aware of my time without treating me like I have zero self-control.

This extension gives you that gentle accountability buddy that says "Hey, you've been here for 30 minutes, just checking if this is intentional?"

Perfect for developers, writers, students, or anyone who wants to be more intentional with their time online.

Available now on GitHub (Chrome Web Store submission coming soon!)

If this helps your productivity like it's helped mine, consider buying me a coffee! ☕ It'll fuel more open-source tools like this.

What's your biggest distraction online? Drop it in the comments — maybe it'll inspire the next feature! 👇
