Freewheels. There may have been 7-speed cassettes (???), but not 6.

The first cassettes were 7-sp, I feel sure. And thanks for the coffee!

I run 8-speed chains with 6-speed freewheels. That’s as adventurous as I get.

So those are narrower chains than would be strictly necessary, correct? Are you using freewheels or 6-speed cassettes? Do 6-speed cassettes even exist?

Maynard: greetings from the Great White North. Sadly I can no longer send $ to the U.S., due to Trump's tariff war and oft-stated desire to annex our country. Enjoy your writing tremendously and will continue to support through subscription to British-based Motorcycle Sport and Leisure magazine. Will not be renewing subscriptions to Motocross Action or Dirt Bike which I have been reading religiously since 1976. Off-road fix will have to come by reading Moto Verte from France, albeit slowly due to limited high school French ( growing up in Montréal in the '70s and '80s plenty of us Anglos didn't know a word of it ).
