"Quiet" Storm over Umhlanga Rocks.

Aug 19, 2023

A "quiet" storm came over Umhlanga this evening.

As per my usual Saturday evening, I was relaxing and watching some TV with my cats when I heard the familiar rumble of thunder. At first, I thought I was imagining it, but there was indeed a thunderstorm coming over.

I snapped into action and headed out to take a photo, but as quickly as the storm came over, it disappeared into the darkness of the night.

Disappointed, I went home.

About 40 minutes later, I heard some more thunder. As we don't get too many storms this time of the year, I decided to chance it again and try and capture a shot.

I headed down to Bronze Beach and waited patiently.

I liken trying to capture photos of lightning to fishing. You kinda know what to do, but you never know what you're gonna get, or IF you're gonna get anything.

For me, it's not always about capturing the right lightning strike on a photo, as much as it is bearing witness of the magnificence of nature. I am always in awe of nature, and its unpredictability makes it so incredibly exciting.

A few sporadic flashes sparked up the clouds on the horizon, but there weren't any real strikes in close proximity. I was about to give up again when a couple of strikes in close succession lit up the ominous clouds overhead. And then, that was it. A few rain drops, and then it was all over. I headed home, but this is what I managed to capture. I hope that you like it.

This is a composite image created from three of the images that I captured, which have then been overlayed to create the single image.

South Africa has the most incredible beauty, and her storms are amazing. Keep looking for the beauty. It's there...

I am Proudly South African.
