Comparing Bard to ChatGPT

In 2000 a movie called 'Almost Famous' was released detailing the story of a teenager wanting to be a rock journalist. When asking for advice on how to write a review of a band, his mentor told him 'Be honest and unmerciful'.

Yesterday Google's respose to ChatGPT 'Bard' was released in Europe so I decided to test it and will provide my honest and unmerciful review here.

As you may know if you have been following me, I have tested ChatGPT with a number of different scenarios, so I tried Bard with some of the same.

I wil first list the positives.

1. Very importantly, it remembers the previous prompt, so you can keep asking questions related to your original question.
2. It can provide program code. I asked it to write code for a Chrome extension and it gave me a suggestion.
3. I asked it to write a marketing text for a bicycle company and I would say it was just as good as ChatGPT's
4. It has internet access
5. It can summarize texts. but I think ChatGPT did a better job.

Now what is not so great.

1. Formatting data was a fail. It could not clean up data that looked like garbage near as well as ChatGPT
2. Proofreading a text in Danish. ChatGPT did a much better job. I asked it to mark changes in bold, it could not - and it made some changes I did not agree with.
3. Logical challenges. It could not solve Google's own trick interview question https://lnkd.in/eys3VMUt
4. I am missing plugins and Code Interpreter like features. What about API integration?
5. I saw a post about a webshop owner in Denmark asking for feedback on his shop. It made odd hallucinations listing comments from reviews of the shop that it seemingly made up itself.

There are many more scenarios that could be tried, but I won't bore you, but, in short my honest and unmerciful verdict is that Bard is far behind ChatGPT.

Perhaps things will change in the future, but for now Google has a big mountain to climb to get to the same level as ChatGPT is now. I have read a statement, Bard is something like 2 years behind ChatGPT when it comes to capabilities.

So, as for myself, I am definitely going to use ChatGPT a lot more than Bard. But, perhaps in the future Bard will come up with something useful that will make me want to use Bard also. I would never underestimate the clever folks at Google.
