Hidden among the trees near Killin,Finlarig Castle is a place with a very different atmosphere from Scotland’s grand restored castles.
Built in the early 17th century and connected with the powerful Campbells of Glenorchy,the castle is probably best known today for its mysterious “Beheading Pit”.Local tradition says executions once took place here,but historical evidence suggests the stone-lined feature may actually have been a water cistern.
That mixture of documented history,local legend and a slightly unsettling atmosphere is exactly what makes places like Finlarig so interesting to explore.
