The creator of Islets, Sheepo, Crypt Custodian, and the recently released Well Dweller
I’ve been working hard to get more of my work published in music, gaming, and travel. Music has been going well, with half a dozen published articles, including my list of the top 10 most overlooked and underrated guitarists from the 1960s and 1970s. I’ve also done nine interviews for Glide and the tonearm, four published so far, with two more coming next week, one of which features a hit song from a well-known movie in 2001. I’ll edit this once the interview is published, but bonus points to anyone who can guess the artist and song.
Travel, on the other hand, has been a tough nut to crack; despite visiting 57 countries and living in 7, I've had no luck with my pitches so far. I have a large portfolio of travel pieces mixed in with my music writing, and I hope to find a home for the unusual stories and experiences I’ve collected along the way.
Gaming is somewhere in the middle; I’ve had 12 pieces published by Cubed3, and it's neat seeing those reviews contribute to the Metacritic average, but so far, the neatest development is not just getting to preview a few finished games before the official release, like Aggelos 2 and Well Dweller, but getting to interview the creator of Well Dweller, Kyle Thompson, a highly regarded Indie developer in the Metroidvania genre, and I hope to build on that as I continue to look for traction in gaming journalism.
I thought he was very open and detailed in his responses; the full review can be found here.
I have a tenth music interview coming up, and interviewing artists is something I enjoy a great deal. Like my Music writing on Medium, I love doing research, taking deep dives, and finding interesting questions to ask artists. I hope to give many more in both music and gaming in the coming years, and Kyle Thompson was an excellent person to start with in gaming.
