You're Born A Human, Not A Monster

You're Born A Human, Not A Monster

May 17, 2025

Perhaps someday, they'll confront the reflection of their cruelty and understand the suffering they've caused.

We love and we loathe. We help and we harm. We reach out a hand and we stick in the knife.

i hope that you
will come to your senses
to gentler shores
where kindness sway
that you would stop
doing the things you do to me
the things that cause me pain

i hope that you
can understand
that even with
our mutual ground
we each have our
own path to tread
i’ll walk mine
and you’ll walk yours

i hope that
you’ll see
that whatever
darkness
that’s festering
inside you
has nothing
to do with me
for i hold no such power

i hope that
you would not
cast your shadow
upon me
suffocating and choking me
in this relentless darkness
that you’ve created

i take in each of my breath softly
trying to be as quiet as i can
so that you wouldn’t notice me
i have lived in fear
not knowing when
you’ll strike again
drawing blood
at my yet to be healed wounds
old wounds and reopened wounds
it’s a heavy weight to bear
as if the guillotine would come down
on my neck at any moment

you have torn my life and dreams asunder
i believe there was nothing left
for you to destroy
but yet, you’ll seek anew
to plunder and plunder
no matter how i strive
to heal and move on
you persisted
like the dark looming dawn

it makes me wonder
what ails your heart
it’s something that
only you and God knows
what can turn
a beating heart
so cold

if you’re hurting inside
i hope you’ll find
the understanding
and the closure at last
please remember that
i played no part in your wounded past

if it’s insecurity that grip you
i hope you’ll find
assurance and confidence
you don’t bulldoze the home of others
just because you are envious of them
you shouldn’t have to
compare yourself with others
in any other way

if you are seeking pleasure
in others’ woe
for stepping on hearts
causing tears to flow
i hope you can take a look
at what you’ve done
at what point can a human heart
can find true happiness
in that?

i hope that
the ugliness in your heart
can be taken away
where it had lead you astray
i know that there’s no inherent
good or evil
but good or evil choices we make
and the path we decree

you’re born a human
not a monster
i hope you’ll find
your conscience
within your heart
let peace reside within
may kindness and love
soothes you like balm
for your soul

But in the end, whose darkness will consume us more – theirs, or the darkness we cultivate in response?

Hello, I'm Britt, the person behind the writings you'll find here.

While I can't promise a constant stream of exclusive content, I can promise to consolidate my often scattered, writing portfolio right here on BMC. Think of this as the dedicated home for all my work. Please note, this process might take time, depending on my daily condition.

For me, writing isn't just my craft; it's my sole way of working. As someone navigating multiple chronic illnesses with frequent medical treatments at various hospitals and clinics, my routine often leaves me with little energy or capacity for much else.

As an autistic individual with a severe anxiety disorder, holding a conventional job is almost an impossible feat—a sad reality that is a stark contrast to how I used to be able to function. These days, even an unexpected phone call can throw me into disarray, let alone stepping out the door.

Despite these immense challenges, they have, unexpectedly, opened new doors. In a way, being chronically ill has been a blessing in disguise, granting me the space and courage to pursue writing.

You could say I'm an unknown and perpetually poor writer (not everyone can be J.K. Rowling!).

I juggle inconsistent odd remote jobs alongside the limited income my writing generates on different platforms.

Your support here helps me continue this work and truly makes all the difference as I explore new avenues.

Thank you for being here and for considering supporting my journey.
