I spent my morning with a pencil and a sketchpad, mapping out the dimensions for a birdhouse. It is too cold for anything to live in it right now, but that is the point. You don’t build for the winter you are in; you build for the spring that is coming. There is a quiet sanity in figuring out the angles of a roof. You have to think about the drainage and the ventilation and the size of the entryway. If you get the measurements wrong, the rain gets in and the structure fails. It is a simple equation of cause and effect that feels completely alien to the political world we are living in.
We come here to find those measurements again. The headlines today are full of people smashing the foundations of our democracy and expecting the house to stay standing. We have federal agents raiding election hubs to fix a vote from five years ago and alliances shattering because our leaders have abandoned the blueprint of reality. It is destructive and it is loud. But we are here to look at the blueprints. We are here to see what can be salvaged and what needs to be rebuilt. Let us walk through exactly what happened today.
