Is it just me, or has this January already lasted about three years? We are in that strange, gray limbo where the holidays feel like a distant memory, but spring is still just a rumor on the horizon. I found myself staring at my coffee maker this morning, waiting for it to brew, and realized I had absolutely no idea what day of the week it was. There is something about the post-New Year adrenaline crash that makes time feel like it is moving through molasses, isn't there?
I have been trying to force myself to unplug for at least an hour a day…just staring at a tree, reading a book that has nothing to do with politics, or actually cooking a meal that doesn't come out of a box. It is harder than it sounds when the world feels like it is on fire, but I’m realizing it is necessary survival work. We have to protect our peace in the little moments, or we won't have the energy to fight for the big ones.

In a stunning abdication of duty, the Senate killed a resolution that would have limited President Trump's ability to strike Venezuela without approval. The vote was a 50-50 deadlock, broken only by Vice President JD Vance, who cast the deciding vote to protect his boss’s war powers. By refusing to check the executive branch, Congress has effectively handed the administration a blank check for military conflict in South America.
A federal court has upheld California's new "Prop 50" congressional map, handing Democrats a major victory in the redistricting wars. The court acknowledged the map is a partisan gerrymander designed to flip five House seats but ruled it legal, validating Governor Newsom's strategy to aggressively counter GOP gerrymandering in states like Texas. This ruling effectively neutralizes Republican gains and resets the board for the 2026 midterms.
The Department of Homeland Security, amplifying Stephen Miller, posted a threat claiming ICE agents have "federal immunity" and that any local official who obstructs them is committing a felony. This is a lie designed to bypass the courts. As I analyzed today, federal immunity is not a blank check to violate civil rights, and the administration is using this bluster to scare local mayors into compliance because they lack the manpower to actually occupy American cities.
Federal agents searched the home of a Washington Post reporter, seizing devices in a leak investigation. This is a massive escalation that treats journalism as a crime. The raid shatters the norm that protects the press from government intimidation and sends a chilling message to every whistleblower considering exposing corruption.
President Trump was caught flipping off a heckler at a Ford plant who shouted "Pedophile protector!" at him. Instead of ignoring it, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung doubled down, calling the gesture an "appropriate and unambiguous response". The administration is now officially framing a loss of composure as a show of strength.
Six federal prosecutors in the Minnesota U.S. Attorney’s Office have resigned in mass protest. Led by career prosecutor Joseph H. Thompson, they walked out after being ordered to open a criminal investigation into Becca Good, the widow of the woman shot by ICE, rather than the agent who pulled the trigger. They refused to weaponize the justice system to target a grieving spouse for her "activist ties."
Two U.S. citizens, Brandon Sigüenza and Patty O’Keefe, were detained, pepper-sprayed, and had their car windows smashed by federal agents simply for monitoring ICE activity. Inside the detention center, they were pressured to become informants and "snitch" on their neighbors in exchange for safety.
AP sources confirmed that a U.S. military plane used to strike a boat off the coast of Venezuela was painted to look like a civilian aircraft. This tactic, known as "perfidy," is a violation of the laws of war and suggests the administration is blurring the line between military operations and international crimes.
I know that was a lot to take in. When you see it all stacked up like that…the courts, the raids, the wars…it is easy to feel small. It is easy to feel like the machinery of the state is too big and too broken to be fixed. But I want to remind you of something important: the goal of this "shock and awe" strategy is to make you feel helpless so that you stop paying attention. They want you to look at the headlines and decide it is safer to just close your eyes.
But you are not closing your eyes. You are here, reading this, staying informed, and refusing to look away. That act of witnessing is powerful. Every time we shine a light on a dark corner, we make it harder for them to operate in the shadows. We are building a record, we are building a community, and we are building a resistance simply by refusing to accept the abnormal as normal. Take care of yourselves tonight.
