I have been thinking a lot about bees lately. I know that sounds strange given the headlines we are dealing with but I find myself worrying about them constantly. They are these tiny industrious creatures that hold the entire ecosystem together and yet they are so incredibly fragile. I have decided that I am going to start a hive. It is something I have wanted to do for a long time but I never felt like I had the space or the time to do it right. But now it feels necessary. It feels like a small act of creation in a world that seems obsessed with destruction.
It is going to take me a while to get up and running. You can't just buy a box of bees and hope for the best. You have to prepare the environment and build the structure and make sure they have what they need to thrive. It is a lesson in patience which is something I am admittedly short on these days. I know that once I get started I am going to get stung. It is inevitable. You can wear the suit and take the precautions but eventually one of them is going to get through. It hurts but it is what it is.
The sting is the price of admission for the honey. It is the cost of trying to nurture something wild and vital. In a way it feels like the work we do here. We get stung every day by the trolls and the bad news and the sheer exhaustion of paying attention. But we do it because the hive matters. We do it for the greater good. The pain is temporary but if we do this right the things we build will last a lot longer than the things that are trying to hurt us.

It is easy to look at this list of stories and feel like the sky is falling. The weight of it all including the wars and the sickness and the political madness can feel crushing. But we have to remember that the news is a spotlight on the broken things. It doesn't show us the things that are holding together. It doesn't show us the people who are quietly doing the work to fix what is broken. It doesn't show us the neighbors helping each other or the doctors saving lives or the teachers showing up every day.
We are those people. We are the ones who refuse to let the darkness win. We are the ones who keep planting the garden even when the storm is coming. Hope isn't a feeling that washes over you. It is a discipline. It is a choice you make every morning to believe that your actions matter. It is the stubborn refusal to give in to cynicism.
So take a breath today. Worry about the bees if you have to but don't let the worry paralyze you. We are going to get through this the same way we always do. Together. Step by step. Sting by sting. We are building something better and that work is worth every bit of the struggle.
