I spent the afternoon in the living room fixing one of the cat trees. We have two of them which is a bit of a squeeze because the room isn't that big but the cats don't seem to mind. This one was in bad shape. The sisal rope was shredded and hanging off in strips and the whole thing was wobbling. I sat there on the floor unwinding yards of tattered rope and tightening loose bolts just trying to find the solid post underneath the mess. My hands are raw and my back hurts but eventually I got it standing straight again. It was sturdy all along it just needed someone to care enough to clear away the clutter.
It got me thinking about the news cycle we are living through. We are looking at narratives that are shredded and wobbly. We have the official story wrapped around the spin which is wrapped around the distraction. It is exhausting work to unwind it all. You have to be willing to get your hands dirty. You have to be willing to sit on the floor and do the work. But if you keep unwinding eventually you find the truth underneath. It is usually simpler and sturdier than the mess they tried to cover it with.
Today we are grabbing the tools. We are going to strip away the 'official statements' and the 'redactions' and see what the structure actually looks like. Let's get to work.

It felt good to get that tree standing solid again. It isn't perfect and you can still see where the old rope was frayed but when I gave it a shake it didn't budge. There is a specific kind of peace that comes from knowing something is secure. We spend so much of our lives waiting for the other shoe to drop or for the floor to give out that we forget what stability feels like. Fixing this one small thing in the corner of my living room reminded me that things can be mended. It just takes time and the right tools and a refusal to walk away when the job gets tedious.
The cats are already eyeing it with that look they get right before they destroy something. It is going to take some work to keep them from tearing it up again but at least now I know the structure will hold the weight. That is really all we can ask for right now. We can't stop every attack and we can't prevent every scratch but we can make sure the foundation is strong enough to take the hit. We can strip away the rot and tighten the bolts so that when the pressure comes we don't collapse.
We have a lot of repairs to make friends. The house is a mess and there are loose boards everywhere we look. But looking at that sturdy post gives me hope. It reminds me that we don't have to fix the whole world in a single afternoon. We just have to pick a corner and get to work. We will strip the paint and sand the wood and rebuild this thing one piece at a time. And we will do it together.
