I stayed out there for a long time. Eventually my neighbors turned their lights off and the world got quiet. It was just me and that little circle of glass. It is funny how small your problems feel when you are staring at something that has been burning for a billion years. The noise of the day just falls away. The anger and the spin and the constant demands for your attention don't matter up there. There is just the light and the dark and the truth of it all.
It wasn't a perfect view. The atmosphere was a bit wobbly and my eyes aren't as sharp as they used to be back in the day. But it was real. It was a reminder that the truth is out there if you are willing to stand in the cold and look for it. We just have to keep adjusting our focus. We have to keep wiping the lens clean. It is easy to get distracted by the streetlights and the flashy things down here on the ground. But if you have the discipline to look up you realize that the real story is much bigger than what they are trying to sell you.
It felt good to use the old scope again. It still works just fine after all these years. Maybe we are all a bit like that. We might be dusty and we might be tired from the fight but we still know how to find the light when we need to. Keep your eyes open and don't let the darkness win.
