I woke up this morning and realized it is Presidents’ Day. The calendar says we are supposed to be celebrating the legacy of leadership and the dignity of the highest office in the land. Banks are closed and car dealerships are having sales and we are all supposed to take a moment to reflect on the giants of history. But I have to be honest with you I don’t see a single reason to celebrate today. I look at the news and I look at the state of our republic and the idea of "celebrating" the presidency feels like a bad joke.
How are we supposed to honor the institution when the people currently occupying it seem determined to dismantle it? We are watching norms shatter and laws bend and the very definition of service be twisted into something unrecognizable. It feels less like a holiday and more like a memorial service for an idea that is currently on life support. The speeches and the parades feel hollow when you know what is actually happening behind closed doors in Washington.
So I am not going to wish you a Happy Presidents’ Day. Instead I am going to wish you a vigilant one. Because right now we don't need balloons and bunting. We need eyes wide open. We need to look past the mythology and see the reality of what is being done in our name. We can’t celebrate the history of this country if we are too busy losing its future.

The presidency isn't a statue; it's a job. And right now, the job isn't being done. It is being exploited. So instead of celebrating the past, let's commit to the future. Let's commit to the work of building a country where we can actually be proud of our leaders again. That is a long road, but it is the only one worth taking.
So enjoy your day off if you have one. Rest up. Gather your strength. Because tomorrow is Tuesday, and the work continues. We don't need a holiday to tell us what matters. We know what matters. And we are going to fight for it every single day.
