Hello and Welcome, Friends!

Iβve never been a superstitious person. I donβt worry about black cats (especially since I have two) or broken mirrors or walking under ladders. But I have to admit that looking at the calendar today gave me a pause. It is Friday the 13th and frankly it feels like the writers of this timeline are being a little too on the nose. We are living through a time that already feels like a horror movie where the calls are coming from inside the house so adding the date on top of it feels like a cruel joke.
It feels a bit like we are all stuck at Camp Crystal Lake. The counselors who are supposed to be in charge are either missing or actively ignoring the warnings. The ominous music is swelling and every time we think we have found a safe place to hide another door gets kicked in. We are watching the plot unfold and shouting at the screen telling the characters not to go into the woods alone but they never listen. The sense of impending doom is thick enough to cut with a machete.
But here is the thing about those old slasher movies. There is always a survivor. There is always someone who keeps their head while everyone else is panicking. They don't survive because they are lucky. They survive because they pay attention. They survive because they refuse to give up even when the monster seems unstoppable. Today we are going to be those survivors. We are going to grab the flashlight and look directly at the monster.
πΊπΈπ The Paper Shield: Why Your Citizenship Is Now Temporary... We need to talk about the terrifying report from NBC News regarding the weaponization of naturalization. The Trump administration is launching a massive effort to strip U.S. citizenship from foreign-born Americans aiming for 100 to 200 cases per month. They are turning the permanent promise of citizenship into a revocable license creating a class of people who have to live in fear that a typo from twenty years ago could cost them their country.
ππ₯ The War on Balloons: How Pete Hegseth Shut Down the Texas Sky... It sounds like a joke but it isn't. The Department of War authorized the use of an experimental high-energy laser weapon to shoot down what turned out to be a mylar party balloon near El Paso. The result was a massive airspace shutdown and grounded flights and a display of incompetence that is truly staggering. We are shooting lasers at birthday decorations and calling it national security.
π₯π The Punchline: When "Civil Discourse" Ends in a Tackle... The irony would be funny if it wasn't so violent. Luke Perez a professor hired by Ohio State's new center for "intellectual diversity" and "civil discourse" has been suspended after being filmed physically tackling a journalist. The man hired to teach students how to debate ideas freely decided that the best way to handle a tough question about E. Gordon Gee was to use a linebacker move in the hallway.
π³οΈπ» The Ghost in the Machine: Why Byron Donalds' "Remote Vote" Has the House in Chaos... The party that banned proxy voting is now embroiled in a scandal over doing it off the books. Representative Byron Donalds is accused of having a colleague cast his vote in Washington while he was physically in Los Angeles filming a TV show. It is a "ghost vote" scheme that exposes the deep hypocrisy of a GOP that demands strict election integrity for you but plays by different rules for themselves.
πΊπΈπ―π² The Betrayal of a Soldier: Why a Georgia Veteran Was Deported Over a Turn Signal... This story breaks my heart. Godfrey Wade a U.S. Army veteran who has lived here for 50 years was deported to Jamaica after a routine traffic stop for a turn signal violation. A clerical error sent his court date to the wrong address and he was removed without ever seeing a judge. We honored his service by exiling him over a blinker.
π΅οΈββοΈπ The Fox in the Henhouse: Trump Hands the CIA Keys to a 'Stop the Steal' Lawyer... In a move that threatens the core of our national security the President has ordered intelligence agencies to share classified data with Kurt Olsen. Olsen is a "Stop the Steal" lawyer who tried to overturn the 2020 election. Handing the keys of the CIA to a partisan conspiracy theorist is not an investigation. It is a dangerous excavation for political ammunition.
βοΈπΊπΈ The Grand Jury That Saved Democracy: Why Mark Kelly and Elissa Slotkin Are Still Free... A federal grand jury in D.C. did the impossible this week. They refused to indict Senators Mark Kelly and Elissa Slotkin for the "crime" of telling troops to follow the law. Regular citizens looked at the Department of Justice's case and said "No." It is a massive humiliation for Pam Bondi and a rare victory for the rule of law against authoritarian overreach.
ππ« The Day the Music Died: Why Gallup Quitting Is a National Tragedy... We are now flying blind. Gallup has officially announced they will no longer track presidential job approval ending a tradition that goes back to FDR. By stepping aside they have removed the "gold standard" thermometer of American politics. Without their non-partisan baseline we are entering an era of "data darkness" where the administration can claim popularity without a reality check.
ππ¨ Selling the Future for Parts: The True Cost of the Largest Deregulation in History... The EPA has officially repealed the 2009 Endangerment Finding effectively legalizing climate change. By removing the legal hook that greenhouse gases endanger public health the administration has stripped the federal government of its ability to regulate emissions. They have handed the keys to the polluters and sold our children's future for parts.
π³οΈπ« The "SAVE America Act" Is a Trojan Horse for Disenfranchisement... The House passed a bill that they claim protects elections but actually disenfranchises millions. The "SAVE America Act" requires documentary proof of citizenship like a passport to register to vote. It creates a paywall for the ballot box that targets the 21 million Americans who don't have those papers ready including the poor and the elderly and married women with name changes.
We made it to the credits friends. We survived another week in the cabin in the woods. I know it is exhausting to keep looking over your shoulder. I know the jump scares are getting more frequent and the plot seems to be getting darker. But remember the cardinal rule of surviving a horror movie. You never go off alone. You stay together. You keep the group intact.
As long as we stick together we have a fighting chance. The monster is scary but he is not invincible. He thrives on our fear and our isolation. When we shine the light on him he loses his power. So keep your flashlights fresh. Keep checking on your neighbors. We are going to make it through the night.
The sequel is always louder and messier than the original but we are still here. We are the final girls and guys of this story. We aren't going down without a fight. Have a safe weekend. Watch out for the masked men in the woods. And I will see you on Monday.
