Executive Disfunction. Why It’s Good To Have A Friend

Jan 25, 2023

Executive Disfunction Definition - Executive dysfunction is a behavioral symptom that disrupts a person's ability to manage their own thoughts, emotions and actions. It's most common with certain mental health conditions, especially addictions, behavioral disorders, brain development disorders and mood disorders.

Maybe you have a pile of dishes piling up. Your apartment needs dusting and the laundry needs done.

But you can’t find the will do to any of these things

But.. your friend calls you or comes over and suddenly you have the energy to do all these things and you accomplished everything and more.

Humans are very social beings and I think that having a friend present gives us that burst of energy to get everything done. We are so busy with our banter we forgot why we didn’t want to do the dishes so we just did them.

When I don’t have a friend around to help with my executive dysfunction I usually turn on some music or NPR to simulate someone there. To help take my mind off the tasks I’d rather not be doing. However it is way easier to have another person present.

Having that little bit of fun being able to chat and crack jokes makes my executive dysfunction more manageable. I’m grateful to have friends that also struggle with this because then we can just call each other. It’s like the lean on me song.

It’s great to have a friend. And now the dishes are done. (But not the dusting)
