There is something different about seeing bison during the rut.

Most of the time, they seem almost impossibly calm—huge animals moving slowly through the prairie, heads down, grazing as if nothing in the world could possibly require their attention.

And then, suddenly, they aren’t.

A bull paws at the ground. Another answers. Heads drop. Horns meet. The ground disappears beneath a cloud of dust.

That was one of the things I wanted to see on this trip to the preserve, and I was fortunate enough to catch several bulls being unusually active—sparring, wallowing, bellowing and throwing dirt around.

I love wildlife photography most when I can get past the obvious picture of the animal and capture something smaller: the texture of the fur, the curve of a horn, an eye looking through the dust, the little details that make the animal feel present and alive.

These photographs have all of that for me.

You don’t really need to see the whole bison to understand what is happening. You can see the weight, the strength, the struggle—and that enormous cloud of prairie dust tells the rest of the story.

Sometimes the best wildlife photographs aren’t the ones that show you everything. They’re the ones that make you feel like you were standing there when it happened.
